We had the good fortune of connecting with Chanel Cooper and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chanel, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
There is a book called The One Thing by Gary Keller. Now, I haven’t read this just yet; However, I feel I have been a true example of what he discusses in this book. This read discusses the benefits of prioritizing a single task in order to maximize its efficiency and see true results. In 2017, I quit my second job of 5+ years and chose to put all my time and effort in to progressing in the beauty industry. This was my livelihood and I wanted to grow. I wanted to build my clientele and I wanted to be a sponge so that everything I learned could stick! Needless to say, this was the best habit I could have picked up. That and consistency.
Consistency creates results. What you water grows.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I feel what sets me apart is I started with “Why?” Why am I here, why hair? Why beauty? In that, I realized that this is my destiny. It runs in my blood and there is no plan B. Underneath that, is passion. You have to be passionate about what you choose as a career. This journey is not easy!! There were plenty of times I felt like giving up. There was blood, sweat and tears that were shed. But guess what? I’m still here. This is for me. I’ve learned I must be a student first and I must be able to follow before I can lead. I’ve learned that ego must be left at the door and that mistakes are my biggest teachers. I had to accept that I was going to fail sometimes and I needed the courage to get back up. I had to believe in myself more than anyone else did. I had to weed out the negativity whether that was coming from other people or myself and I had to make this my One thing. Now, this doesn’t mean multiple streams of income are not the goal, it just means I was intentional about where I chose to focus my energy.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I will say living in Atlanta, there are always so many hidden gems even I haven’t discovered yet. I’m very spontaneous when it comes to outings, so wherever the wind blows us is where we will end up lol. I’ve heard a lot about Bar Vegan and Rock Steady recently. So that would be on the list.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The Circuit Salon Company has definitely been in my corner since day one and I’ve been with them a little over four years now. Attallah and Sybil, the owners, have shared an abundance of love, support and mentorship. They were also the catalyst in my joy for reading! I’m all for, and highly recommend reading books on self-development, spiritual growth and self-love. The road greatness isn’t easy! You need ways to keep your mind, body and spirit in the right place. Another plus one is my younger sister Paris. She was warmly welcomed in to the salon early 2021 and has been such a big help in our service cycle! Not too mention working with your sister is awesome!! She keeps me balanced, makes work even more fun, and gives me a reason to exceed the expectations whether I’m feeling high or low. I also give thanks to my wonderful clients. I’ve built such valuable bonds with everyone even beyond the chair and for that I’m very grateful. Of course, I wouldn’t be where I am now without them and I’m glad they recognize the great heart I have and the gift God blessed me with.
