Meet Chad Singleton | Environmental scientist & Science Communication Officer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Chad Singleton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chad, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
Resilience matters the most to me. Failure isn’t something to fear. I have certainly experienced failure in my life. Everyone has. The key is never giving up. My parents always say that nothing worth having comes easy. I’ve definitely experienced this personally. As a scientist, a science communicator and a graduate student I’m faced with new hurdles almost every day. Being resilient against adversity and overcoming these hurdles gives me a sense of pride. More often than not, on the other side of that hurdle is growth and an amazing experience

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Professionally I am an Environmental Scientist with a background in virus prevention and inorganic chemical analysis. More recently I have been focusing on my career as a Science Communication Officer for a non profit organization called The Black Science Coalition and Institute (B-Sci). This process wasn’t easy. I had to adjust just like everyone else during the Covid-19 Pandemic . Being a Science Communicator is new territory for me but I’m learning more about Science Communication every day. I’m blessed to be able to use my position and platform to foster an interest in Science by way of Grade School/College speaking engagements, STEM work shop events and hosts of other STEM Education efforts from my organization. Through B-Sci I am able to give back to my community in ways that I would have never thought possible in years prior.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am 100 percent a foodie! One of the first places I would suggest would have to be the Varsity. This restaurant is completely the heartbeat of Atlanta and the best place to get a chili cheese dog!
My second suggestion would be Bambinellis ! This Italian restaurant will always have a special place in my heart. They have the absolute best New York style pizza in Georgia. Hands down! One of the first jobs I had was working in this restaurant! They are completely my family and some of the nicest people you will ever meet!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents are honestly my biggest cheerleaders and the driving force behind my success. They continue to inspire me and push me beyond my limits. Even with where I am at in my career now , my parents still keep me grounded and push my to strive for more. I love them more than life itself. They are my heroes
I am very appreciative of my friends and colleagues in The Black Science Coalition and Institute Organization. They were truly a God send at a time when I felt alone as a Black Man in STEM. They provided a community of fellow scientists that looked like me and shared similar experiences . They are my catalysts. I have certainly become more confident in my abilities as a scientist since joining their community.
