We had the good fortune of connecting with Chad Creasy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chad, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
Painting makes me happy. The only way to be truly happy is to be in the present moment. Painting puts me in the present moment.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve always enjoyed being creative. In the 1990’s, my dream of becoming a musician crossed paths with my natural aptitude for visual art. Creating posters and album covers for the bands eventually led to an interest in painting and graphic design. I’m a native to Atlanta, I studied painting at the Atlanta College of Art. I graduated as a Bachelor of Fine Art in 2001. My wife and I moved to New York City to pursue the glamorous lives of starving artists. It was very competitive and inspiring. It didn’t work out because I was young and I made a lot of bad choices back then. We eventually moved back to Atlanta and had children. In 2008, I cleaned up my act. I took on a graphic artist career to support my growing family. Time for making paintings got scarce for a while. By 2015, my life began to change. A lot of my friends and family passed away and I was very sad. I studied Buddhism for several years. I learned that the only way to be truly happy is to let go of desire and rest in the present moment. Painting has always been part of my true nature. Creating art brings me to the present moment the same way meditation did. It’s also more fun. I have been painting constantly and staying happy since 2015. This is what I learned along the way. It’s never to late to try something new. It’s OK to ask questions. That’s how we learn. Pay attention to your audience. They will tell you if what you are doing is good or not. Pay attention to there reaction or lack of engagement. If something is not generating any attention, stop doing it and try something else. Accept the reality that not everything you do is going to be a master piece. Making mistakes is how we grow. It’s better to make bad art than no art at all.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Blicks art store, the High Museum of art, the Spruill Center for the Arts.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate this shout out to my Wife and Children. Without them, my life is meaningless. I also learned a lot from the writings of the DaIai Lama and Jack Kornfield. They taught me about mindfulness.
