We had the good fortune of connecting with Celicia Butler and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Celicia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit but the start of my cake business wasn’t planned. I started watching episodes of cake boss. I’ve been baking since I was twelve so I was inspired by the show to try decorating cakes and I thought it would be a great way to save money if I started making my own cakes. My first specialty cake was a simple Sponge Bob cake for my sister’s birthday. My second cake was for my cousin’s baby shower and people started ordering shortly after.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m usually busy studying my craft and sculpting techniques but my proudest accomplishment is beating agoraphobia. I wasn’t able to pursue my passion for a while because I battled crippling anxiety and depression for eight years which made it extremely difficult to work or even live a simple life but God delivered me from it. I had to fight through it and through my trials I’ve been featured in the Shade Room and I’ve had the opportunity to create cakes for celebrity clients from the cast of Love and Hip Hop ATL, Real Housewives of Atlanta, Family Matters, Punky Brewster and celebrity Chef Maurice. The most valuable lesson I’ve learned is to never allow fear to stop you.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I honestly wouldn’t know where to take a friend if I had one to visit for a week. I’m mostly a homebody. I go to work and come home and when I’m home I’m either working on cakes or writing scripts. If I had to take a friend somewhere it would probably be to Sweet Baby Kita’s comedy show or Justin Whitehead’s comedy show because they’re hilarious and they’re the most exciting people I’ve met.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my late grandmother Mamie who has always inspired me and been my support system.
