We had the good fortune of connecting with Cece Carpio and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cece, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
Through my artistic practice, I learned that not only do I have to be creative about the products I’m producing, but how to also be creative on how I live my life, and inevitably, how my work engages with it. Creativity and innovation come in all art forms embedded in our everyday lives- how we wake up in the morning, how we prepare the food we eat, how we engage with our communities, etc… I’ve learned to gauge that I’m in the right path when my work fits in with my everyday rituals, and something that can be enjoyed and reflected in with friends, family and strangers alike. Creativity does not stop when I stop painting a wall, it is within the breath that I take and within the dreams and vision of the world we are transforming.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My praxis centers everyday people whose stories are often not heard and been made invincible. I paint them bigger than life in public spaces in order to share our thriving presence and to show the dignity and power of our existence. During history’s most intractable moments, we cannot look past the critical role of innovation and culture to ultimately make a difference when traditional interventions are failing. It is cultural collaboration made possible through years of practice and cultivation, that I am able to lead, intervene, and seize the time with the trust of that shared vision. I reclaim public spaces to exhibit our stories, capture and expand audiences, and refuse the limit of our circumstances with the hope to create an environment where justice and dignity can be felt just by looking at the walls. As a visual storyteller, I paint to lift up our communities, share our stories and provoke the power of our imagination.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Out on the streets, looking out on public walls.
