We had the good fortune of connecting with Catori Langley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Catori, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I believe work life balance is vital to success no matter what the business. I know people tend to say things about working while other sleep but I have always believed all that does is cause wrinkles and unneeded stress. Don’t get me wrong though I do work very hard on my craft but I still take time for my mental health and happiness. I always say ” what is the point of success if you get there and you’re unhappy”. I feel in the beginning I worked so hard for so many hours but when Covid happened I realized I am not good to anyone if get burnt out. I make a point to spend quality time with my family, boyfriend and new puppy Mink. I try to read a few chapters of a good book before bed and go to bed appreciating all the things I do have and have achieved thus far. All my work or stresses will still be there in the morning as long as I am blessed to see another day so I work and play hard.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am the host of a web series and podcast called Tori Talk with Catori Langley. What I believe sets me apart from others is my true need to give a voice to the voiceless and platform for those who feel overlooked. Ever since I was young I loved hearing about people who lived different lives from me and their story. Most people think their daily lives are mundane but for me that’s where the true beauty lies and why I love to tell their stories. I would say honestly that is what excites me most just meeting new people and being able to connect with them. I have a true passion for others and that is what has made me successful today. I think people enjoy conversing with those who really care about helping others and being supportive. I’ve always strived to be genuine and fair and think people take well to that. Getting to where I am today has not been easy but nothing in my life has come easy. The older I get though the more I appreciate the struggles life can bring. I’ve worked hard for everything I have achieved thus far and I hope to continue to build my brand and platform so I can reach so many more people and tell their stories. I can truly say through all this I have learned even more so the importance of patience and consistency. I think seeing what others are doing makes you want to rush the process but just from the opportunities I have been getting lately just putting in that hard work truly does pay off.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love this question because I am always that planner friend who loves to go to the new places in town to have a good time. I have just started a new venture called “On The Go with Catori & HJT” where we go to different places in the DMV and document our experience. Being that it is still Covid going out has been tough but since we realized people were going to want to know what to do as soon as it safe we decided to create this as a guide for millenials in my area. With that said if this was their first time here the beginning days we would spend the day sightseeing down at the National Mall and grabbing &pizza because it yummy and easy to eat on the go. Midweek we would definitely do a happy hour bar crawl after spending the day looking at all the amazing art D.C. has to offer. I would definitely say Artechouse and the Rinwick Gallery. I always try to incorporate some sort of art wherever I go. To round out that day we go to Throwsocial and enjoy the eray of fun activities they offer. From Thursday on its straight party mode so I would say we spend a full day at the Wharf DC. Its newly renovated with so many restaurants and just fun things to do by the water. We would have to go to La Vie, Whiskey Charlie and 12 Stories. Those are some of the best views in the area paired with the most instagram worthy aesthetics. Fridays are always when I like to get dressed up and go to a nice dinner so we would have to go either Nobu, Mastros or Filomena’s depending on what we had a taste for. You can’t visit the DMV without visiting the National Harbor so we would spend our in entire Saturday there. We would ride the Capitol Ferris Wheel, have a tasty bite by one of the many restaurants by the water my favorites are Graces Mandarin and Redstone, and finishing the night at the MGM for gambling and good drinks and both the Blossom Cocktail Bar and FELT lounge. If she still has energy after all that we go to brunch on Sunday I am always going places for good food and good photos so we would have to go to either Hook Hall or Riggs Cafe for brunch.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shoutout my family and boyfriend Jeffrey. I have been blessed to be able to be in a family that truly supports and helps me to achieve my dreams. No matter what I want to do they have always been there to keep me going through the tough times and celebrate with me through the good. What I have learned from Jeffrey has been so meaningful and beneficial to my series and life. Being that he is a professional videographer and photographer he has shown me so many things that have improved my series. From new editing tips to gifting me cameras and new light setups we are always doing things to make each other better personally and professionally. For those reasons and so much more I dedicate my shoutout to them. I love you guys!
