We had the good fortune of connecting with Cassie Correna and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cassie, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m originally from Evergreen, Alabama, but spent most of my childhood in Columbus, GA. Back home, I’m the oldest daughter and granddaughter in a blended family. Growing up, I always cherished family time and often wished I could freeze those moments—something I shared with my grandmother. When I turned 12, she gave me my first Nikon camera. It wasn’t fancy, but it was the start of my photography journey.

However, in high school, my focus shifted to academics and my dream of becoming a pediatrician—something I was naturally drawn to, being the oldest of five and the daughter of a successful ER nurse. It wasn’t until my senior project that my passion for photography was reignited. Still, I didn’t pursue it immediately after high school. Instead, just before finishing my B.S. in Psychology, I found myself capturing my mother’s engagement photos. Her idea sparked a fire in me, pushing me to finish my degree so I could fully embrace photography.

Thanks to the support of the strong women in my life and my lifelong desire to capture and share memories, I am now following my passion and pursuing photography as my creative career.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My photography is about sharing my vision with my clients and helping them see themselves as beautifully as I do. I focus on minimal editing, accentuating the natural beauty of my subjects with a moody, ethereal style. While I specialize in portrait and wedding photography, I also love capturing landscapes, especially during my hiking trips to places like Alaska, the New England coast, and the mountains of North Georgia. I sell prints of these destinations in my shop.

In my downtime, I experiment with self-portraits, where I can explore creative freedom and produce cinematic edits that shift hues and offer new perspectives on my work. This allows me to stay true to my artistic vision while showing clients how I see the world through photography.

For weddings and family portraits, I take a documentary-style approach, capturing candid moments and genuine emotions. One of my favorite prompts is asking clients to make each other laugh, especially with kids—it always creates an endearing atmosphere in the photos.

When I began my photography journey, I coined the phrase ‘Capturing Correna’ for a high school project. It represents capturing the side of me I don’t always show the world, as my middle name is Correna. Today, I go by Cassie in most areas of my life, but I’ve combined both aspects of myself into my photography brand—Cassie Correna Photography.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Atlanta is a vast and beautiful city, though as someone who prefers a quieter lifestyle, the hustle and bustle can be overwhelming at times. One of my favorite places to visit is the Atlanta Botanical Garden—its peaceful atmosphere brings a touch of nature into the city. I also love the Atlanta Zoo and the Georgia Aquarium.

What Atlanta does best, however, is its diverse cuisine. Whether you’re craving Korean, Italian, Greek, Japanese, Indian, Mexican, or classic American dishes, there’s something for everyone. One standout for me is Eight Sushi Lounge near Truist Park, where I’ve had the most beautifully presented sushi. Their Summer Affair cocktail pairs perfectly with the Island Breeze Roll—it’s my favorite meal there.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate this to my friends who always trusted me enough to be my models so I could bring my visions to life but most importantly, to my mom for recognizing my talent and passion and always pushing me to follow my heart and fall in love with everything I do.
