We had the good fortune of connecting with Carmelle Harris and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carmelle, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting my own business was,

“Is my boss ever going to pay me enough to be able to afford to live next to him in that fancy house.? Will I ever be able to afford to buy a new car like his? Will this paycheck be enough to take a vacation to greece like he did with his whole family?”

And I thought about that. I was making $12 a hour as a multi salon Manager. Which means I was over two salon locations, managing double staff, doing double bank drops, and doing double salon product inventory. I had double the workload, and now assistant to help me with nothing. I was working on my days off, my check was never on time, I was stressed out. I loved his business more than he did but was not reaping no benefits.
So I thought why cant I just open up my own salon. Covid hit and salons closed. I started to do hair out my house. Then I moved into a Tiny suite in Westwood, California. Out grown that, then upgraded to a double. Business was so good I eventually out grown that now I am in a triple. The next move will be a 12 chair salon.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am orginally from St. Louis Missouri and I live in Los Angeles California. I came out here with $200 to my name and a broken spirit. I had to do a lot of soul searching and innner growth. I got tired of not being happy. SO I found my purpose and I am living in it,
What I am mostly proud about is that I wake up every day with a purpose. I wake up every morning knowing that I am creating a brand for people to trust. That is what makes me happy.
At Beautiful Hair Salon, we are proud to announce that we specialize in ALL hair textures. We pride ourselves with continue education on all hair texture and styles. It does not matter what your ethnic is, we are here for you. We do press and curl, perms, relaxer, sew-in braids, highlights and lowlights. We are here to serve the public. And the public is full all different beautiful colors. It was not easy at first because we all came from different backgrounds and we had to be open-minded. We had to learn how to think out side of the box. Once we did that the sky was the limit.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So I am orginally from St louis Missouri and I now live in California. I love the Griffith Park and Observatory. It so beautiful. There you can see the Hollywood sign and the hiking paths. It absolutly beautiful. then we would do bruch at No Jealousy. The Sunday brunch and cocktails there is delightful. Then we would venture to Rodeo Drive and the famous Hollywood Blvd.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shout out to my mother Charlotte Ann Harris. She has passed but she always told me that my future was always bigger than what I can see. That I am a leader and not a follower. That I will have to go throught some disapointment. But that was because I was suppose to be stronger and to never settle for nothing.
