We had the good fortune of connecting with Carlos Fuentes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carlos, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I’ve always strived to create something special and unique, and my art style reflects exactly that. Many people spend so much time trying to imitate something they saw online, or emulating their heroes which has inherent limits in personal artistic growth. All of your heroes are exactly that because they did something different; they tried a new approach, they took a risk outside of the box, and they were recognized for standing out and providing something new, fresh, and unique; this is exactly what made them stand out as heroes in the first place. You don’t have to compete with someone else’s comfort zone: Create your own. Make something new and different from anyone else in the world. If you’re the only one doing it, you’ll always be the best at it and you’ll always stand out from the other crowds of people all trying the same things.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My style of artwork hinges on outer-space themed images and artwork. I create all types of large, fluffy nebulas, sprawling gaseous giants, planets and grand celestial bodies. Being able to create something so organic and fluid makes each piece unique and special, and having such a grand scale represented in something people can carry around with them forever is an incredible honor. As with anyone who works hard, it’s never just that final product we all see on the surface in internet posts or casual conversations; it’s struggling to meet deadlines, losing sleep putting in the extra work, and making personal sacrifices. But it’s also knowing how to balance these things with your own mental needs to stay happy and productive, which is a lesson learned the hard way (But a lesson finally learned nonetheless).

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being fairly new to the area, I’m living off of suggestions more-so than giving them at the moment. Every Uber-Eats delivery is just restaurant roulette, every outing is a Google mystery that we’ll figure out along the way.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Oddly enough, my biggest inspirations within my industry aren’t even tattoo artists: They’re piercers.

I’m incredibly grateful for the guidance and advice of some wonderful piercing artists who have taken the time to grant insight on starting and owning a business, maintaining the most stringent and educated safety practices, and who love the industry enough to educate and mentor genuine growth. There’s a LOT of people I’d love to name off, but I’m sure nobody wants to read a massive list of names so I’ll keep it local.

Christina Blossey, owner of Piercing Experience in Atlanta, has been nothing but supportive and an absolute wellspring of knowledge and advice both personal and professional. A master of her craft, Christina cares deeply for her industry and maintaining the highest standards and professionalism; she is the kind of business owner that is dedicated and supportive of those who also want to see the industry growing in a positive direction while furthering education and outreach for individuals within those industries to grow as well. It’s my opinion that every industry needs more Christinas.
