We had the good fortune of connecting with Carlene Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carlene, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my brand/business is Authenticity. Authenticity is what allows us to attract the right client and make those real connections. I quickly noticed that when we are our authentic selves it gives customers the opportunity to relate to us which then makes it easier for them to trust in the products we offer.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
February 2020, while working from home during the pandemic, I realized that my life seemed to be missing something. Before 2020, day by day, night after night I spent my time traveling back and forth to the city to work at my job in Healthcare, sitting at a computer for 8-10 hours, then heading home to do the same thing again and again. It was during this time at home that I realized I had lost a piece of me, and it wasn’t before long that I noticed it was my passion for Creativity. Throughout my entire life, I did something creatively, whether it was dance, sing, cheer, draw, write short stories, or baking for fun, and somehow after graduating college, I lost that. Initially, I said maybe I could start a podcast or a youtube page but decided that I didn’t want the next creative thing I start just to stop like everything else I did in the past. Though I wasn’t sure what it would be, I knew for sure I wanted it to be rooted in my passion for helping others and my love for creativity. After praying and waiting, on February 29th the idea of Eva’s CreationZ, a black women-owned bakery business, was birthed out of my bedroom. Throughout my entire life, my grandmother, Eva Mcdonald, has taught me how to bake. Passing on to me a gift while also teaching me an invaluable skillset that I now want to share with the world. I created our Instagram page the very next day but kept it a secret. Then almost every night for the two next months I practiced and learned how to design cakes with my sister, Zoe. Every cake I would complete, I would post on our page, and somehow because of hashtags and Facebook groups, I grew a following of 300 people in what seemed to be overnight. On May 3, 2020, I decided it was time to reveal my business and I officially Launched Eva’s CreationZ.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Since I live New York City, honestly just taking a walk down the block sometimes seem like the best time ever, just cause there is always something going on! Ha. I would take them to first get some pizza at my favorite spot “Originals Pizza” in Canarise, Brooklyn. Then take them on a classic new york train ride into Manhattan. Do a little sight seeing and of course some shopping! Then try to land us some tickets to one of the many shows happening every-night and grab some dinner at one of my favorite restaurants Pazza Notte. After that, we would wrap up the night with some cookies from Insomnia.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to dedicate my shoutout to my Grandma, Eva! Little did she know that when she use to ask my sister and I to come and help her bakes and decorate cakes she was planting a seed in our life! A seed we know hope to continue to grow as we scale Eva’s CreationZ.
