We had the good fortune of connecting with Capri Joppy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Capri, what do you attribute your success to?
One phrases that I live by is “collective versus competition.” To me, the phrase means that working with other creatives gets me way further than working against other creatives. Though competition can sometimes be a healthy form of inspiration, competition is at times unnecessary. Therefore, I found success in collaborating with local creatives and being inspired by the amazing things they create. I’ve learned so much valuable free-game from collaborations that I keep in my creative tool box.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a fashion, beauty, and fitness model. I focus on a “girl next door” look. So I alternate between sweet and sassy looks. I recently began my loc journey in August 2021 & my goal is to change the narrative of what a successful model can look like. It’s rare to find models that are loc’d so I take pride in changing the narrative.
Nothing worth having is easy and my modeling journey has been far from easy. Being a freelance model and having to secure my own gigs can be trying at times. It takes a lot of grounding, patience, and faith to survive drought periods where bookings are scarce. At times, I find myself comparing my day one to other model’s day 100. All in all, the journey has taught me that I am mentally stronger than I gave my myself credit for. With every rough patch I’ve experienced, there has been twice as many joyful experiences in modeling. I want my brand to reflect peace/love, authenticity, and divine femininity.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have an unhealthy obsession with pasta, so we obviously have to hit up Fiorella in Oxon Hill or Filomena In Georgetown. I’m a nature girl, so Patapsco State Valley Park in Elkridge and Great Falls In Potomac are a must. I also love activity dates so Punch Bowl Social, Dave and Buster’s, roller skating, etc would also be in the itinerary.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give huge shoutouts to the local studios that I frequent such as House Of Photography and Mass Creations. There’s nothing but amazing vibes there and there’s always something new to learn with them.
Another shoutout to a group of photographers I collaborate with often, Wes, Lee, Jerry, Joe, & Chris.
And finally, shoutouts to my family and friends who have been more than supportive since the beginning.
