We had the good fortune of connecting with Candace Malone and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Candace, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Integrity. Unfortunately, there is a stigma surrounding personal injury lawyers, well really lawyers in general, that we are only in the profession for the money. My desire to become a lawyer was never financially motivated, as I spent my early legal career working in public service either pro bono or for a nominal salary. My objective has always been to help my community and to really personalize the lawyer/client relationship so that people feel comfortable coming to me for help. Currently, my firm has almost 150 clients, yet each client gets a hands on experience with me and has my cell phone number. This approach has fostered numerous client and colleague referrals. We are truly grateful!

What should our readers know about your business?
My law firm, Malone Legal Group, is a boutique personal injury firm that provides a hands on intimate experience for our clients. Every one of my clients has my cell phone number. It’s not everyday you see that. We are also unique in that our firm, although based in Atlanta, assists clients all over the country. I am personally licensed in three states, Georgia, Kentucky and New York, which has truly expanded my knowledge of the law and how different states apply insurance law. In our first year of business, Malone Legal Group has secured over 3 million dollars in settlements for our clients! We are also set apart because of our ability and willingness to litigate each case all the way through trial. We do whatever it takes to get justice for our family of clients.

The path was certainly not easy for me. When I passed the bar back in 2016, the job market for new lawyers was awful. It took me months to find a job, and while I waited for the right opportunity I was helping friends and family, sometimes pro bono while also working as a Conflict Attorney for the City of Atlanta helping those who couldn’t afford legal representation. The Fulton County District Attorney’s office then took a chance on me, and I was able to climb the ranks to a supervisory role in just 1 year as an Assistant District Attorney. From there, my career just kind of took off, and after 7 years of working at law firms, I decided to bet on myself and start my own business. Malone Legal Group’s foundation is strong, and my team and I are continuing to build, brick by brick.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would absolutely take them to my FAVORITE restaurant for dinner, Hal’s steakhouse in Buckhead, followed by a fun night of dancing under the disco ball at Johnny’s Hideaway. Of course, we would also do the touristy things like the Georgia Aquarium or the ferris wheel at Centennial Olympic Park. It’s football season right now and the new Signia Hotel has an awesome sports bar to watch the games on Sunday. I also really love the Virginia Higlands area for some shopping or lunch at Fontaine’s Oyster House. And a stop at my favorite ice cream shop, Jeni’s Ice Cream, is a must! Atlanta offers so many great restaurants and I’m a foodie, so naturally I would take my friend on a restaurant tour throughout the city. However, I also love to cook, so dinner and wine at my house would certainly be a great option. I would probably make some Creole/Cajun inspired cuisine since my family is from Louisiana and I have some great family recipes!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Of course, I give all due credit to God. I have been blessed with so many great leaders and mentors in my life, however one person in particular comes to mind, Attorney Keenan Nix. Keenan and I first met in 2016 when I approached him after he gave a presentation at a program for young lawyers. I was so enamored by his ability to command a room with his presence alone and how unique his perspective and approach was to the practice of law. Fast forward to 2021, I was selected for an Associate position at the same personal injury firm where Keenan is currently a partner, and this is where our relationship began to blossom. I found myself consistently in Keenan’s office looking to him for guidance about cases, yet every time I would leave his office, I would feel encouraged and more confident! Keenan would give more than advice, he would uplift and encourage. He constantly reminded me of my strengths and pushed me to keep achieving. His encouragement helped me become one of the top female producers for the Atlanta office and one of only 3 Black women in the country to attend the annual law firm trip, which was invite only and achievement based. When I told Keenan I was leaving the firm to start my own law firm, he immediately assured me I was built for it. To this day, Keenan continues to support and endorse me and trusts my expertise with his own friends and family. Anyone who has ever come in contact with Keenan will never forget him. His energy radiates every space, and he is truly a blessing.
