We had the good fortune of connecting with Candace Emerson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Candace, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I honestly look at the word risk or the phrase risk taking the same way I do the word faith or taking a leap of faith. It’s just all depends on your mindset at the time. If you’re in a negative head space you’re more than likely to talk yourself out of something beneficial because you may feel it’s “too risky”, but if you look at the same opportunities from a positive mindset you’re more than likely to way the pros before the cons and take that first step of faith into your blessings.

Risk taking has played a very beneficial role in my life, especially when I had so called friends and family telling me I wasn’t going to accomplish the personal goals I set for myself. Everly head tell me that I wasn’t going to finish school, start my clothing line as well as produce my first fashion show. Well needless to say I graduated, started my clothing line and produced my first show all within my first year of stepping out in faith.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a fashion designer. I started off small making Halloween costumes and doing minor embellishments on outfits. I started in my basement after having to leave aviation as a flight attendant.

I wouldn’t necessarily say my journey was hard, but it wasn’t the easiest either. One of the lessons I had to learn starting off was, Just like life there are opportunities everywhere, but you have to make sure they’re the right ones for you.

I would like the world to know candy yams apparel is a brand dedicated to my late father Keith Wilkins. He was the one who gave my nickname “Candy Yams” when I was a little girl.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Monticello’s. Great music, food and mature vibe.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Yes, I would like to shout out Kierra emerson if I love food Atlanta for always encouraging, supporting and praying for my success.

I would also like to thank my mother for buying me my first sewing machine when I told her my dream. She continues to be my number one supporter and I love her for that.

Lastly but not lease. I would like to thank my man James. I have never been in such a loving and supportive relationship like this. Thank you for trusting me and encouraging me to continue to chase my dreams and goals. Even when I start to doubt myself you remind me success isn’t an overnight thing especially when you give up. Love you.
