We had the good fortune of connecting with Cameron Warren and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cameron, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I believe that the most important factor behind my success has been my belief in myself. Firstly, I have to give all glory to God. I have been blessed to have support from my family and peers who have been in my life. I feel my passion for creating and learning has been a key factor in how versatile I am today. I like to understand many of the elements it takes to make something happen. Liking all of the subjects in school, I found myself leaning more towards the STEM programs because it allowed me to get hands on most of the time while implementing a research side first. I took this approach a lot when learning new skills such as videography which one of my most recent add-ons to my resume, which was partly the main reason I created an LLC for.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art comes from a place of pure storytelling. Most of my art, whether it be music, a video project, or even the way I set up my room, is a reflection of my surroundings. I visualize everything in my mind almost like a movie. Listening to the leaves rustle and the birds chirping from my window, I can place myself in a scene. It can be a happy scene, a sad scene, or whatever I want it to be when I am imaging it. Having such a visual take to my art I feel really helps me to be able to navigate through the millions of options when creating. Some things just make more sense to do in movies but sometimes, a viewer likes the occasional surprise or unexpected turn. Having experience with many sides of production allows me to have a fuller understanding of how certain things would go naturally in certain fields allowing me to be able to include that in my art. I took a few years of french and german in high school and all i can do is introduce myself and count numbers. I look at art and various styles and genres of art as universal languages and I have been fortunate enough to feel i can comprehend and communicate in different languages of art.
I am most proud about my tenacity. There have been many times where I could have stopped doing something or just quit but I have a belief that I can accomplish anything that I truly put my mind to.
One of the hardest things I overcame in my life was being sick from mold during college. That time was very difficult for me and my family. My friends and teachers even noticed how i was effected. I was severely allergic to mold and it was hard to get the situation remediated in a timely fashion so the effects were very strong on my health. I am still feeling effects of the mold today. It has been difficult getting healthy in timely fashion because the treatment was a holistitc apporach which worked well but not covered under insurance. I am at a point where I at least understand how my body has been effected and i can adapt to suc but while being in school, it was very hard. I was sleeping 8 hours regularly waking up feeling like I pulled an all nighter. My brain was in a complete fog. i forgot walkin to the cafeteria one day and was standing inside trying to recall how i got there. A lot of doctor’s at the time did npot believe that mold could effect the brain and were confused on how i could be sick, thinking that only the lungs could be effected. This was very difficult to convey to my teachers as well as i had a hard time focusing in school. I was so grateful for my family who came together to get me out of the dorm because I didnt have the mental focus to fight alone and keep up with school on top of doctor’s appointments and school email corresponding. I think one of the biggest things i regret from that time is not being able to be as active or involved in things as i would have liked to. I went to college to excel and continue my academic achievement and learn, gain connections, and more. I feel like half of the time i spent trying to stay alive. I learned a lot about myself and others during this time and how beneficial it is to have a strong support team who will show up for you when you cant. I’ve been a hard worker and continue to be but this time has made me really look at moments of peace with much more respect, even though i am still trying to find a good balance between working and advancing, sometimes which feels like making up for lost time, but i have to remind myself that everything happens for a reason and that it is part of my story. I have and experience that i can now use to connect with others who may have had a similar experience or can relate.
I want people to know that I aspire to do everything i do pure heartedly, and i want to create a space for others to do the same. i want to bring people together through art and life. It is the small details that make up the big picture. Passion.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would show them downtown for sure. Mt. Washington and the incline if they they aren’t from around here. When i went to college out of state, the landscape was so flat because it was right by the coast. After being there for 4 years and then coming back, all the roads i used to to everyday seemed so hilly. It really felt like a rollercoaster to me getting readjusted to it. Id like to see someones first time reaction and also with the curvy roads we have here compared to other regions.
The point is cool as well. Some food depending on the vibes from the area.
The museums and galleries are plentiful I’d say so that’s a spot for seeing some art. The humble tour of some of the different unique areas close by the city. One of my friend’s from out of state was amazed with how we went from the heart of downtown and drove 20 minutes on a highway and was still in the same city and that we went through so many unique areas in between.
Depending on the day, maybe check out some lounges or bars if thats the vibe.
i dont do much myself because im usually busy doing something or enjoying my time in the crib but i have been finding new places purposely if im out and looking for something to eat, i have been considering local places as opposed to fastfood places.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a shoutout to the Most High. My parents have been a big support in my life. Being an only child, I had a lot of time on my hands to learn new skills and be involved socially in various extracurricular activities. My family, grandparents, aunts, uncles cousins, all of them, had a role on the unique person that I am today. I also want to give a big shoutout to the teachers throughout my life who allowed me to gain experience in my craft. (in no order, Mr. Berkey, Ms. Lorey now Mrs. Gail, Mr. Bracey, and all of my academic studies teachers). My good friends throughout my life, the ones who have been there since day one and the one’s who I met later in life have all played a role in support even if they didn’t realize. Shoutout to my my HBCUs across the nation. I met some really good people attending an HBCU and learned a lot about who I am and what I can accomplish with a spearheaded mind. I also would like to shoutout all teachers and leaders who understand mental health. Mental health can be overlooked in many situations and often viewed as something to “get over” but looking down the line, many generations of people suffer from things today as a result of undiscussed things. I’ve had the opportunity to be apart of an artist cohort that focused on the mental health of black artists in Pittsburgh.
