We had the good fortune of connecting with Calvin O’Neil and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Calvin, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
First, I want to start off by saying that starting your own business is a commitment and requires dedication, resources and sacrifice. My wife and I have always worked out together since we first started dating. It is a passion for us, and we are 100 percent committed to living a healthy lifestyle. In 2017, my wife encouraged me to start training other people because she saw the potential in me. So that year, while working a corporate job, I decided to train clients on the weekends. The weekends turned into weekdays, and I start building my clientele from there. When the pandemic hit, I found this to be an opportunity for me to step even further out of my comfort zone and actually turn it into a business. I figured I could start making a living off pursing my purpose and passion, while helping others reach their goals. When wifey and I worked out together, we would always say that we were in our “ZONE.” So I took our last name, O’Neil, and combined the two and created O’ZONE.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets O’ZONE FITNESS apart from other training facilities is the family atmosphere that we provide. Whenever someone comes through our doors, we immediately make them feel at home and make them feel a part of our family. I am most proud and excited for some upcoming community events and an upcoming strength training and nutrition program, that we plan to launch at the beginning of next year. I feel like O’ZONE FITNESS is where it is today, business-wise, from consistency. We are consistent with posting, consistent with our type of training and workouts that we provide and we are consistent with providing a family-oriented atmosphere. Running a business is definitely not easy. You literally have to be consistent, disciplined, and work hard. How I have overcame the many challenges that come along with having a business is being disciplined. Discipline will take you places even when the motivation is not there. A famous author, Jim Rohn, once said, “Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments.” This is absolutely right. You have to have discipline in order to accomplish your goals and aspirations. I want the world to know that I went from training in the living room, to training out of my garage, to owning my own personal training studio, with two trainers under me, all within a 9-month time span. It is doable! You just have to be disciplined, consistent, and work hard to get the results you want.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend is visiting the Chattanooga area, I would definitely have a fun-filled weekend planned. If it is during the summertime, we would start off with a workout or hike on Saturday morning. We would either do a bootcamp style workout that morning or go hiking on Stringer’s Ridge Park. We would then go brunch at Hello Monty. We love this place because they have a nice outside patio area, and they have 1/2 off their Tequila Mexican Firing Squad Crafts. We would then either walk downtown for a little while or go get on the lake and do some swimming and boating. After we come home and relax for a few hours, after being in the sun all day, we would then get ready for dinner, we would go to our favorite and that is Il Primo. We like the vibes there, the food is good, and the limoncellos are the best in the city. We would then end the night either at Cigar Bar or No Hard Feelings, depending on the vibes that night. My wife and I are big foodies, so we would definitely make sure we take him to some of the newest spots in the city. Some of the new spots are Rosecomb, Little Coyote, Elsie’s Daughter, Civil Provisions, or Attack of the Tatsu.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to take this time to shoutout my wife and all of my supporters. Without them, I would not be nowhere near where I am in this business today. From my wife helping me turn our garage into my first personal training studio, to the first clients that came and trained with me in our garage, from the ones that don’t train with us, but buy all of our gear, to the ones that saw that O’ZONE would be bigger than me. I appreciate you more than you would know. You all keep me motivated and keep me going. O’ZONE would not be successful and where it is today if it wasn’t for your efforts, support, love, and encouragement.
