Meet Calvin L. Rogers | Producer & Musical Director

We had the good fortune of connecting with Calvin L. Rogers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Calvin L., what matters most to you?
The most important principle that matters most to me now is simple to enjoy the projects I’m working on. During my grad school program at Berklee, literally every professor told the class for every project and assignment to simply have fun! This is actually one of the major things that stuck with me from the program. I’ve taken this approach to my professional career as well. The music comes out so much better when you’re really into it and enjoying the moments and process. This applies to studio projects as for being an instrumentalist or producer. This also applies to live performances as well whether being a musician or musical director. I believe as industry professionals we should enjoy the projects and music we are working on, otherwise we are hindering the project in a negative way and could also be keeping the opportunity away from someone who actually enjoys the music and would love to work on that particular project. To me, if someone is working on a music project that they don’t believe in or at least actually enjoy the music, then he or she is just doing it for the money which is not a good look in my opinion. This is one of the things I’ve become more aware of these days.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a Producer, Musician, and Musical Director. I am probably most known for being a multi-instrumentalist and being able to play over ten instruments professionally. Keyboards, drums, bass guitar, lead guitar, acoustic guitar, organ, harmonica, ukulele, mandolin, any percussion instrument, sing, and Disc Jockey. My specialization is Keyboard out of all the instruments I just named. I am also known for working in the mainstream genres of Pop, R&B, and Country. Today I am grateful to have been apart of literally thousands of gigs and sessions for various artist and bands across the nation. What sets me apart from others is my attention to detail and huge passion for the music I create and play. I try my best to fall in love with the music I am working with whether in studio or on stage. I also do my best to support the artist in which a lot of musicians & producers overlook. I study in depth every artist I work with, their history as well as their current state. I then try to do everything I can to get them to the next level and to achieve whatever it is their aiming for. If the Artis wins, I win! I am probably most proud of receiving my BA Degree in Music from Oakwood University and obtaining my Master’s Degree in Music Production from Berklee College of Music later this June!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There’s a lot of people I could shout out and I really hope I don’t miss anyone. I’ve been extremely blessed to have had great mentors, teachers, professors, friends, and colleagues who have poured a lot into me over the years and have really helped me to become who I am today. I’ll start with someone who is probably my biggest mentor right now, Devine Evans. Devine is a five time GRAMMY award winning producer. He has worked pretty much everyone in the entertainment industry such as Beyonce’, Riihanna, Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Mary J Blige, and Queen Latifah just to name a few. After meeting Devine at an industry conference a year or so ago in Las Vegas, we became real close and continued to work together on numerous projects. He inspires me and always makes himself available for me whenever I need him. Kamaal Malak is another producer and musician who I consider a close mentor. He currently resides in Nashville and just got off tour with Shania Twain as her bassist. Other music industry professionals who I consider mentors and key individuals who have immensely poured into me include: AyRon Lewis, Virgil Stratford, Kelvin Wooten, Roger Ryan, Dr. Wayne Bucknor, John Stoddart, Kevin Kelly, Marcus Perry, Peter Headley, Karl Pride, Latimer Dobbins, Rev. William Jones, and Dr. Michael Ruttlen Sr.
I also have to shout out my family! This includes my incredible wife, Princess Rogers, my sister A’Yonnika Jones, and my lovely parents Calvin Rogers Sr and Sarah Rogers. I’m also grateful for solid education over the years. All of the schools I attended have helped me along the way. These schools include: Barren Fork HeadStart – Horizon Elementary – Discovery Middle – Bob-Jones High School – Oakwood University – Berklee College of Music.
