Meet Calvary De’Rosa Sampson, LPC | Teen & Millennial Therapist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Calvary De’Rosa Sampson, LPC and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Calvary De’Rosa, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I think the most important factor behind my brand is authenticity and empathy. As a Licensed Professional Counselor I specialize in helping adolescents and young adults through transitions and phases of life. My life-changing experiences including; my parents’ divorce, Katrina, and college have allowed me the ability to connect with people from the heart and lived experiences, outside of my education and credentials. I am passionate about helping people adjust to life changes because I understand both personally and professionally.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Calvary De’Rosa Counseling and Consulting is a virtual private practice providing therapy services to Louisiana and Texas in which I provide individual, family, and couples counseling as well as consultation, trainings, and workshop for organizations supporting the same populations I serve. Our mission is to educate, motivate and inspire individuals to present themselves to the world authentically and confidently.
The thing that makes me most proud is just being able to support college students, especially first generation with their emotional well-being while navigating that academic setting. I remember my mom instilling education and going to college in me at a very young age, but when I enter college it was different than imagined. As a black young adult and first-generation college student entering a PWI, it was a lot to adjust to and I didn’t feel confident that I belong. This is why it brings me so much joy being a Black Millennial Therapist working to eliminate the stigma around mental health and creating safe spaces for others to feel supported.
Now the business part has not come easy because my education prepared me to be a Therapist and not a business owner. I have acquired a lot of trainings, mentorship and knowledge through books. I think because I understand my “why”, it helps to motivate me to learn the logistics of the business side, and keeps me eager to learn more.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting we would have a picnic in the park with crawfish and wedding cake snowballs (my favorite flavor). Hopefully, the visit would be during the time of Festival International de Louisiane (held in Lafayette, Louisiana), then we would walk the festival listening to good music and trying different foods including Boudin (a type of sausage link). The next day we would take a 2-hour drive to my hometown New Orleans, Louisiana where we would eat a bowl of Yakamein (Creole noodle soup). The trip would end with beignets (deep-fried pastry)in the French Quarter. I love food and music which is also a big part of Louisiana culture.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My tribe includes; my mom, mentor, former supervisor, husband, family, and friends. I’m so grateful for the support I have had along the way, my tribe knows how to hype me up lol. In moments of self-doubt sometimes you have to believe in the greatness others see in you until you can believe it for yourself.
I decided to go into this field without knowing many Therapists, especially Black Therapists so when you’re doing something you’ve never seen before it can be scary. It’s like I don’t have a road map of what to do?! As I continued pursuing my degree I have had the honor to sit under my mentor and former supervisor and learn so much many gems. I am forever grateful to them!
