We had the good fortune of connecting with Calvaniece Mason and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Calvaniece, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I officially launched Calvaniece Mason Hair Brands Co. in 2015 with the Elite Pro Turbo | Professional Hair Dryer. I was inspired to create an ergonomically designed hair dryer for hairstylists after discovering the number of work-related injuries in which stylists develop, and suffer from, carpal tunnel.
After operating for several years in 2018 I went through a very traumatic experience; I lost a close loved one in which I suffered from hair loss caused by grief and depression.
Searching for a solution to my own hair loss, I decided that I would create one, and the result is the Anti Itch + Growth Oil and my extensive line of hair care products.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Calvaniece Mason Hair Brands Co. is “Luxury hair care redefined”, a sustainably driven hair care line for people of color.
Before launching Calvaniece Mason Hair Brands Co., one major factor important to me was how could the brand do its part in creating a more sustainable environment?
From the products that we create to the packaging in which we use; sustainability to me is about meeting the needs of the present without compromising opportunities for the future.
Our PET bottles are comprised of remarkable energy-efficient packaging material. We ensure this through the plastic bottles we use, labels and mailer box material. The hair extensions retailed are ethically sourced.
I am extremely excited about the future and potential growth of Calvaniece Mason Hair Brands Co. in the beauty market.
I have made a lot of sacrifices and shifts in my perspective regarding what matters most to me in business.
Through my consistency, dedication, passion, and hard work I am living and walking fully in my purpose.
I have learned so much since launching in 2015 and I have taken a lot of losses along the way. Even with losses you must take them as lessons and keep believing in yourself, your brand, your vision, and your purpose.
I want people to know that building a business and brand takes work. You need systems in place and the funding to put people in place to handle the things you are not skilled at.
Entrepreneurship, running a business and building a brand is risky and entails many unforeseen circumstances. It takes time to create brand awareness and brand love which are the building blocks of any successful business.
You want to be able to scale your business, not just make money quickly. You want to have a purpose behind your business and creating awareness behind your brand’s purpose takes time, it requires consistency.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love a good time at a concert so I would for sure make plans for us to attend one. We would go for breakfast at Another Broken Egg or Flying Biscuit because I love them both.
Maybe have dinner at Yebo Beach Haus one night. I have a lot of friends from other cultures, and I love Afro Beats music so I would take them to a mutual friend’s restaurant, Grand Lekki Cafe. They have a full bar and lounge.
We would also have a night of fun at Blue Martini.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I grew up in the beauty industry! My mother was a hairdresser as well and I was always in the salon with her.
I feel like she passed the baton to me because I was molded into the industry. When I entered high school, I started doing some of my classmate’s hair in her salon on the weekends.
I give a lot of credit to my mother because that’s where I got my foundation and experience. I was able to learn and grow being surrounded by other talented stylists.
I also credit Jon Reyman! Jon is phenomenal and provided me with so many opportunities from working backstage at New York Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week and Vogue CFDA Awards Show.
Jon taught me how to create runway hairstyles, as well as the art of being humble, paying it forward and opening the door of opportunity for others.
