We had the good fortune of connecting with C.s. Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi C.S., putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
The single most important decision that I made was relocating to Georgia. I was working at a job where I had worked for almost 25 years. I had been feeling like I had become boxed in. The company wasn’t allowing me to grow. They were only allowing me to be what they wanted me to be and I wasn’t able to advance my career. I had become very good at what I did and I felt like that’s where they wanted to keep me.

Also, I didn’t feel like the people that I was around were very supportive of what I really wanted to do. I saw all of the lucrative money that some people were making as influencers so I tried that route. I started an Instagram page like “Where’s Waldo” but called @wheres.nardo (now just @n.a.r.d.o). It was a travel and art page where as I traveled I would take photos in front of cool murals, artwork or nice scenery. I would tag the locations so if folks who followed me would be in those areas, they would be able to do the same. I started building a decent following but allowed myself to get derailed by comments from people closest to me.
I would always get slick comments by people close to me like “You think you’re a model”, “There goes the model”. It was always model this and model that and a few other things that I can’t recall what they would say. It really irritated and kind of got the best of me. So I stopped posting and sometimes would deactivate my page. It hurt because it would be the people that you would think would support you and be that motivation to keep going. And some probably really liked the posts but would rather say sarcastic things instead of acknowledging things that they liked.

But moving here to Atlanta, the people here that I’ve come across have been very supportive. Here everyone has their own style, own personalities and move at their own pace. Unlike what I experienced in the D.C. area. Up there seems like everything is uniformity. Everyone and everything has to be the same or you don’t fit in.

So here in Atlanta, I took what they criticized me about and used it to my advantage. I turned a negative into a positive. Last year I actually did my first professional photo shoot.

Atlanta has studios EVERYWHERE. Movies, TV shows and series are being recorded OFTEN. So, I took the photos from the shoot and created me an actor’s portfolio/profile.

This year so far I’ve been been in 3 movies and 3 TV series.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I got where I am by being persistent and knowing where I want to go.

It definitely wasn’t easy.

There were a lot of ups and downs and a lot of dark moments.

I overcame the challenges by not forgetting what my goals are and not letting the obstacles get in the way.

There are a couple lessons that I’ve learned along the way.
1. “If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it”
1 Corinthians 10:13
God will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we can bear, and he will always provide a way out.
2. Sometimes those closest to you can be the biggest hurdle to cross. You just have to leap that hurdle and move on to the next. Whether or not your friends and family support your dreams and goals, you have to keep on pursuing them.

I would just want the world to know that I’m just me. I don’t want to be anyone else.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ponce City Market
Chateau Elan
Atlantic Station
The Battery
Some of the Restaurants on Peters St
The Interloch

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate this shout-out to my kids. My kids have been my happiness and strength and has helped me get through tough times. When I’ve been down they’ve always brought joy back into my life.
Also, my mom! She has always been my biggest supporter. Without her I don’t know where I would be. Love you Mom Dukes!
