We had the good fortune of connecting with Brooklynn (TheGhettoVisionary) Hill and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brooklynn (TheGhettoVisionary), how do you think about risk?
I have taken many risks throughout my career and many of them have brought me where I am today. I do not think about risks in a way where that risk can be a liability but something I can learn from and better myself, my business, and even others around me. Taking risks such as applying to Clark Atlanta University, as it was not my first college choice. Coming to Atlanta from Minnesota was definitely one of the risks that I have taken and it has benefitted me tremendously.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started my business off going by the name ShotByBrook. I was in high school and started trying new hobbies to see what stuck with me and it was photography. After a period of time, I was heading to college, and as hard as it is to believe Clark Atlanta University was not my first choice. It was either PNCA in Portland, Oregon, or SAIC in Chicago, Illinois.
After coming to Atlanta I started pushing myself to do better and be more consistent with my business. I used the little to none networking skills I had and started to do free shoots to get my name around campus and get some exposure. It was not easy because there are so many people who do what I do on campus and even more. It really is an unspoken competition between people in this industry, but the amount of support has been more than enough.
Not long after that, I changed my name to TheGhettoVisionary. I had a bigger vision for myself and I knew with the skills that I have I could not limit myself, even with my name. I am always learning from my mistakes and from others, but I continue to remain open to criticism because I know I am never done learning.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Since I moved from Minnesota to Georgia in January, I have not had a lot of time to just explore and find Georgia’s hidden gems, but my favorite place to eat right now is this Jamaican spot in the west end and mangoes by Georgia states campus. I love food so you can never go wrong with a good Caribbean spot.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out The Elevator Creative LLC for giving me a platform when I first came to the AUC. They gave me a platform where I could showcase my talents and give me a space to grow within a chosen family.
