We had the good fortune of connecting with Brooke Lynn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brooke, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I grew up thinking of risk as rather careless, intimidating, and just not worth it. What I didn’t know is that risk, to some extent, is present in every season of our lives, whether or not we can identify it as “risk.” I also had no idea that taking the biggest risk of my life would challenge me to my farthest limits, help me to believe in myself more than I ever have before, and bring me the most difficult and most joyful days of my life. After four incredible and grueling years studying and working toward my Biology and Neuroscience degrees at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, I was accepted into 2 incredible medical schools that would have both prepared me to be the incredible physician I had dreamed of becoming. But even after working so hard toward this amazing achievement, I wasn’t happy. And it was in this in-between moment that I realized that I needed to make a big decision and potentially the biggest risk of my life: medicine or music? Music has always been important to me and the first passion in life. Throughout my college years, I was focused on my education first, and it was easy to put my true passion and dream of becoming a country music singer on the backburner. But when it came time to decide what my future four years will look like, endless studying toward an incredible future in medicine, or risking it all, including my four years of hard work in college, to move to Nashville and chase a dream that will never be guaranteed. The safe route or the unsure route? To be completely honest, I really dug into my faith during this confusing time and sought God when trying to make this incredibly difficult decision. I have never felt more peace and stillness when deciding that I needed to risk it all, move to Nashville, and do the music thing. Don’t get me wrong, there were a lot of tears and questions along the way, but I truly believe I had known all along that I needed to follow my dream. There is not a single day that goes by, even the really difficult days when I can barely pay my bills and have to work odd jobs to make ends meet, that I regret taking this risk and following my dreams. At the end of the day, we aren’t guaranteed a full life here on Earth, and I’m not going to waste a single day of my life not chasing my dreams and doing the things that make me happier than I have ever been. Risks are scary, sure, but they’re so worth it. Your happiness and your dreams matter, and I believe passions are placed in our hearts for a reason, so why wouldn’t you chase them?

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Nashville has felt like home to me since I was 14 and visiting as a tourist with my family. It is my favorite city and I have dreamt of living here since I was a teenager. I absolutely love when my friends come and visit and I definitely have my favorite spots down! Brunch and coffee in Nashville is always fun and I like to go to The Sutler on weekends, Maple Street Biscuit, The Perch, First Watch, Frothy Monkey, and Milk and Honey. I also love to hit up all my favorite restaurants for food, including barbecue at Smokin’ Thighs and Pucketts, Double Dogs in Hillsboro Village, happy hour at Firebirds, and Bartaco on 12 South. And for dessert, I love to take my friends for ice cream at Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream, doughnuts at Five Daughter’s Bakery, and delicious cupcakes at Ivey Cake. Although Broadway is a big tourist attraction, and I like to take friends down there for a night, I usually stay away from there for the most part, because it gets very crowded and can be overwhelming with all of the long lines to get into the favorite places! Fifth and Broadway is a fun, new addition to downtown Nashville with shopping, coffee, and food, so this is a MUST when visiting Nashville (and there’s great parking)! Shopping along 12 South and in Hillsboro Village are another few of my favorite places to bring my friends! Arrington Vineyards is one of my FAVORITE places to take friends, although it’s about 40 minutes South of Nashville. It is absolutely breathtaking, there’s usually fun music throughout the weekends, and the wine is INCREDIBLE! For a fun night out, I love to go to the bars with live music off of Demonbreun (Live Oak, Tin Roof) and midtown (Red Door, Winners, Losers)! The Listening Room, Grand Ole Opry, and The Ryman are also fun places to see artists and songwriters while they’re in town. The Opry Hotel is a fun place to walk around! And I love to take my friends hiking at Radnor Lake and the other cool hiking trails around town! Downtown Franklin is another fun place to visit, with all of its historic beauty, shops, and fun restaurants!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I will absolutely start with God being at the forefront of this career that I have in music and without Him and my faith, chasing my dreams would have been a lot more difficult. I believe that God placed my passion for music and performing in my heart for a reason, and when I felt the peaceful discernment to say “no” to medical school and move to Nashville, knowing no one and not having a single clue where to start, I knew that was God promising He would walk me through this journey. Most days are difficult, trying to figure out how to make it all work, pay bills and pursue music when you don’t get paid much for playing shows or writing songs that may never get heard by another human being, all while being 1,000 miles away from my friends and family. But I have to trust that God knows exactly what He is doing and that it will all work out, even better than I had planned it. I truly don’t think that I’d be in Nashville and chasing my dreams with such confidence and belief in myself without my faith and trust in God. And of course, my parents, have been so incredibly supportive along the way. My parents would take me back and forth to Nashville when I was growing up to write, record, and play shows, which was such an incredible experience. My dad was the first person I called when I decided to move to Nashville instead of attending medical school, and I will never forget that he said, “It’s about time.” They are truly my biggest fans and make sure that they are front and center at all of the big shows, many of which they have to travel far to attend! My parents taught me how to work hard, believe in myself, and chase my dreams, and they are just as invested in my dreams as I am. I am so thankful every single day to have been raised by such incredible parents.
