Meet Brody Taylor Smith | Musician/Drummer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Brody Taylor Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brody, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
When it comes to the music industry, most people don’t realize how much time goes into the smallest things. I can put hours on top of hours into writing, rehearsing & recording parts for a song & most people who end up listening to it won’t even consider that. In a way, this can be a good motivator to create music that’s memorable & holds up even more than you would otherwise. While of course, one of the top priorities of making music is to make what you yourself personally think is great, it can still be a bummer to hear that someone didn’t like what you created. Releasing something & having it be well received, however, certainly helps make all that extra time that went into it feel even more worthwhile.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Well, I’m a metal/rock drummer & have been playing for 10+ years. I make a pretty big effort in being as precise & convicted as possible with what I play & with how I play it. I don’t think having conviction behind my playing makes me unique, but I do think that the way I write my parts for the music I play helps set me apart a bit because of the extra time I take to listen & experiment with different variations before settling on what feels best. Being honest, intuitive & as uncompromising as I can is very important to me when making music. When I say I make an effort to be uncompromising, however, I definitely don’t mean that I’m unwilling to accept criticism or someone else’s ideas. Collaboration is a crucial part of making music for me personally, so I moreso mean that I try my best to stay true to the original intention of ideas & to not let any setbacks compromise the end result of my work.
The thing I’m most excited about currently would be my band Satyr’s upcoming album. We spent a very long time writing & recording it & it’s almost done being mixed. While I play with a variety of bands, whether it be a side project or some session work, Satyr is the band that I have the most to do with behind the scenes & all the music is very close to my heart.
I’m not at a crazily established level in my career or anything, but being at the place I am currently where I receive the opportunities I receive is all due to constantly pushing my playing & trying my best to stay motivated. The longer you do that, the more people you meet & the more opportunities you receive. That may come off as a somewhat cliche answer, but you’d be surprised at how many people give up altogether. Everyone gets unmotivated at times but choosing to stick with it is what really counts. I’ve also been super fortunate over the years to have worked with truly kind & levelheaded people & to have also had the support of my family. Not everyone is so lucky, so I definitely attribute that to part of why I’ve stuck with it, although, I absolutely still considered giving up at times when I was younger.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m honestly not the best person to ask about the place to be in Atl lol. I live in John’s Creek about 30-40 mins from the city, but when I’m in the area, I enjoy walking around Little Five Points or Peidmont Park. Most of the time, however, I’ll just be at a friend’s house or something & that’s usually more than satisfactory for me haha.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d have to shoutout my parents & then anyone I’ve ever played music with.
