We had the good fortune of connecting with Brodrick Whittley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brodrick, what inspires you?
I’m really inspired by the artists of all types, especially someone who brings there artwork to life. Crafting an imagination out of reality is like painting on a canvas. Its really inspiring to see artists and there work that reflect with the time. Artist’s are important. They curate a remedy to simplify a complicated world.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from others is that I’m in my own league. I’m not in competition with anyone. My artistry reflects my story and my experiences growing up.
For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by lights. In a dark world, lights provide much needed illumination; that illumination is part of who I am, but I want to push further than visibility. Without lighting, there is no space. My goal is to tell a story using lighting and production for live entertainment.
As a lighting designer I want to tell a story through lighting. As a lighting designer its my responsible to compliment the artist vision. Whether its concert lighting or theatrical lighting. There is so much power in what a beam of light can do. Its impressive how a beam of light manipulates darkness. Its poetic that lighting provides “beauty in our darkest moments.” Lighting in live performance can shift the audience mood and attention. Lighting can create shapes and shadows to help give your stage or your artist texture and the best color palettes to compliments the artist emotions on how they feel.
My journey began at Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL. Disney afforded me use my imagination to create and my first taste of live theatre. I would go to Hollywood Studios and watch Fantasmic. Its a show full of live actors, characters, water effects, pyrotechnics, lasers, and mist screen projections. It was electrifying, futuristic, magical, optimistic. That’s when I knew I wanted to be a lighting designer.
Becoming a lighting designer required me to be student and learn the lighting industry. Walt Disney World was unique because the company was years in advance in technology. That motivated me to think in advance as well. It was important for me to learn the foundation of lighting and that’s was becoming a technician. That gave me the ability to really see how intelligent fixtures operate.
Also, on my voyage becoming a lighting designer, connectivity is key. Your Network is your net worth. Its important to develop relationships on your rise to become a professional.
My proudest moment seeing the world as a lighting programmer on cruise ship. Cruise ships afforded me to really honed in my skills as a lighting designer and experience the various sunrises, sunsets, calm seas, and colors that light the world. The gradient color palettes at sea and sky reflect my work.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my family and thank you believing in me. Also, I want to thank my alma mater Savannah College of Art and Design for assisting me to perfect my craft to create for my community. Also a special shoutout to the beautiful people I met on cruise ships. Cruise ships afforded me the opportunity to see the world
