We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittney Lee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittney, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Louise’s Sweets & Treats was started by me exploring a passion that slowly developed. Both of my grandmothers baked, and growing up in the home with my maternal grandmother is where I really developed that passion. After baking for years for my friends and family and being told that I need to sale my cakes, I stepped out on faith and decided to sale my cakes during the holidays. I was successful and decided to form an official business named after my maternal grandmother.
What should our readers know about your business?
Louise’s Sweets & Treats is a small home based bakery. I am the owner and baker. Our signature item is our Cream cheese pound cake. We specialize in different flavors of pound cakes, but we also offer a wide variety of cakes, cupcake, cookies and other treats. I am proud of and excited about my rebranding and deciding to focus on “old-fashioned” cakes and sweets that are made to taste great and make you feel great as opposed to decorating and more aesthetically looking goods.
I was able to get where I am by balance, hard work, and sacrifice and it is not easy. I am still in my career as a full time engineer, and running my own baking business in my “free time” has is challenges. I have learned to multi-task, and I have become a night owl and an early bird. I have to stay organized with my time and tasks. The one thing that has helped the most in the last few years is the ability to work my engineering job from home, that makes time management and work life balance easier.
The lessons I have learned on the way are to accept the help when given. My family and friends step in to help, and it while it isn’t always easy to let go of control it is needed a times. I have learned to not be afraid to take the opportunities presented to me, and to go after the opportunities that I want.
I would like people to know that there is love, hard work and dedication behind my brand. Oh and it tastes amazing too!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am located in Huntsville, and I frequent Atlanta a lot. First thing would be desserts from the best place in the city, Louise’s Sweets & Treats! Then, I would take them the Hammer heads in Huntsville to eat and to drink. They have the best daquiris in the area and their food is great too. The peppered pig just opened and their burgers (my favorite food) are amazing! My favorite hangout spots are Campus 805, The Camp, and Stovehouse, all these places you can eat, drink, and play there is always something new to get into. Catacombs is a speakeasy that is immersive and has great cocktails. Once we got to Atlanta we would have to go the Grindhouse burgers, and have a relaxation day and body scrub at Spa Land. Cuban cuisine at D’Floridian would be on the schedule. Bottle Rocket is one of the best places my go to when I want a great dinner and drinks without the crowds. I couldn’t go back to Huntsville without getting carret cake icecream from Camicakes
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my grandmother Louise Thomas. I am named after her, she taught me how to bake, my signature pound cake recipe is her recipe, and my business is named after her. She passed away September 2021, but she was able to see the start of my journey, and I know she is guiding me onto what is next for me.
