We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittney Holmes Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brittney, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting my business was purely passion-driven. I started my career in the literary industry when I was 15 years old. I thought I’d found what I would be doing for the rest of my life, however, there came a season where I felt like I had lost creative control over my work and did not have the time to pour into my craft as much as I would have liked. When I felt I had lost time for my passion, I intentionally created and begin to help others with finding and writing their stories as well. BHJ & Co. now functions as a literary agency that helps new and aspiring authors not only find and write their stories, but successfully launch book titles and brands using publishing and marketing strategies that are uniquely tailored to client’s individual goals. Starting BHJ & Co. was a journey back to my personal passion and call in life, and ultimately lead me to helping other’s pursue theirs through the literary industry as well.

What should our readers know about your business?

BHJ & Co. is a literary consulting agency that provides courses and coaching for new and aspiring authors. We are not like any other literary agency, as we focus on helping our clients establishing a foundation for their literary legacy, versus simply assisting with putting out a book. We brand authors and assist in their understanding of their identity as a literary business. I am proudest of the fact that we are firm in our mission, vision and values. While we are not a Christian organization, per se, my business practices are rooted in my faith and I strive to honorably serve my clients to the best of my ability.

I began writing at a very young age. I was published by the time I was 16 years old with a major publishing house and eventually went on to receive several literary awards and honors, including being named a bestselling author by Essence Magazine twice. I experienced some professional challenges as I matured and began to discover my purpose in life, not realizing it had already been revealed. Ultimately, through exploration and discovery, God brought me back to writing but positioned me as a coach for others who struggle to share their stories to empower and encourage others. After over 15 years in the literary industry, I’ve found my stride as a business coach for writers, helping new and aspiring authors write their stories and communicate their message beyond the publication of their book. Brittney Holmes Jackson & Co. was established to help writers not just tell their stories but use them to establish life-long legacies.

When I think about what difficulties I have faced, I have to first acknowledge that I know that this journey was not meant to be easy for me. I experienced a great deal of personal and professional challenges while getting to this point of understanding my purpose in this industry. I’ve tried to also walk away from this call, wanting to initially focus on simply being a business coach for any and everybody. This was also while I struggled with the realization that, for the time being, I’m not meant to be a full-time entrepreneur. God patiently waited for me to realize that His ways were best for me and I ultimately shifted my thinking to do what He’d asked.

Interestingly enough, through everything I tried to do on my own in the years prior to starting my business, He brought me right back to where I’d started – writing. However, this time, He expanded my opportunity to impact others with my stories and with those of other women who have so much experience to share through their own testimonies. It’s been an amazing ride and nothing short of blessings coming my way ever since I simply gave Him my “yes.” Understanding that my journey and purpose was higher than myself is what has kept me going.

Though we are a considerably “young” business in the literary industry, we have had a great deal of success and it is all due to the integrity we place in each and every publishing project or client we take on.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Whew! The city of Atlanta is not as large as people believe, but there’s always something to do. Let’s say Covid wasn’t still a thing and it was summer time, I’d definitely have to take my friend to the food and wine festival that happens in June. It’s an amazing time. We’d also go to brunch at Miss Icey’s – it’s a dope, hidden gem in the Decatur area that specializes in island cuisine and has a unique drink menu. Dinner, at some point, would have to be at Thrill, a tasty Korean BBQ spot that is a real chill vibe and overall good time. Most people outside of Atlanta do want to see the “tourist-y” places, so I’d likely have my girl grab a City Pass so she can see The World of Coke, National Center for Civil and Human Rights, Aquarium, and the Zoo all within the week.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would be remised if I did not dedicate this shoutout to Royalty Publications (@RoyaltyWriter). This literary coaching and publishing company is where I learned the most about the literary industry as a self-published author. The training and practice I received there has been priceless and significant in my entrepreneurial growth. I would also love to shoutout @NatashiaEdwards, my business coach, who helped to catapult BHJ & Co. to a new level of excellence in the past year. Lastly, my accountability partners, @AuthenticallyAlex and @VerniqueEsther, for assisting in my focus, being thought partners, and affirming me on this journey.
