We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Joy Drew and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brittany Joy, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I initially started with a non-profit society for Nannies in the Atlanta Area (The United Nanny Society). This was a way for me to help educate Nannies and bring Nannies together. We do playdates, socials, vent, talk about continuing education opportunities, help with resumes, help each other with contracts, and just be a big support system for each other. Well, from here, I was reaching so many Nannies. I wanted a way to reach Families too. You cannot change an industry from only one direction. Therefore, I decided to open an Agency to help change the industry in all directions! There are so many Agencies that only advocate for the Nannies or only advocate for the Families. I wanted to start an Agency where I could advocate for everyone. I wanted to create a fair platform for all parties involved.
I had a large advocacy platform with just the society, but I knew with interStellar Nannies, I could reach so many more people an advocate for domestic workers as well as the people who employ them.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My Nanny Agency, interStellar Nannies, was founded on the need for a fair platform in the Nanny industry. I wanted to create a platform that not only advocates for Domestic Workers and their rights, but also advocates for the Families employing them. So many Agencies pick one side and only represent that side. I want to make sure everyone is represented. The biggest way I do this will deal with the pay rates of the Nannies. Many Families see a high pay rate and get worried that they will pay someone this high rate who has not have the corresponding qualifications. Within my Agency, I allow all Nannies to charge whatever they feel their worth is, but I educate them on the rate and how they should determine this rate. Most of my Nannies come to me wanting to charge lower than the Market rate and I give them resources to show them that they can earn these higher rates. On the Family side, I let the Family know that most Nannies with certain experience and qualifications, will need a minimum of a certain pay rate. This helps the Family weigh the price of the Nanny with the qualifications they come with. Educating the Families on the pay rate associated with their expectations has been a large factor in helping to advocate for fair rates.
It has not been an easy road. Many Families push back because they do not understand that a Nanny is a luxury service and the most expensive form of childcare they can get. I have also been banned from many Facebook groups for advocating for Nannies with their pay and benefits. There are always people who do not think Domestic Workers should get the same things as individuals in the corporate world (vacation, sick days, health insurance, etc.). So trying to show them that a Nannies jobs is just as important as a corporate job, is a difficult task sometimes.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My first stop is going to always be Mutation Brewing in Sandy Springs! They offer an amazing location with the benefit of being extremely Family friendly including the human and furbabies! They have games, food (by Dogwood Kitchen), and of course some amazing beer! There is always something going on there and some event. They also host “Mutate at Five” at Sandy Springs Green the first Thursday of every month which is a Family Friendly festival with live music, food, and drinks! It is one of my favorites! My next stop would be the Battery. With so many options of places to eat and things to do, it is a must! Hopefully there is a Braves game going on we could go to as well!
Another great place I love to go to is Fowling in West Midtown. Think Bowling meets Football meets Cornhole. It is a great spot to hang out and do a great activity for an afternoon.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I give a huge shoutout to the amazing Nannies and Families I have helped. I would not be here today without all the encouragement from the Nannies in the Society. They are the ones who pushed me to increase my advocacy to everyone in the industry and not just Nannies. They saw something in me I did not know I had and pushed me to become the advocacy leader that I am and am proud to be. A long time Nanny friend/coworker, Lara Hazzard has been one of my biggest encouragements! In my roughest times, she is someone I talk to right away! She always has the best advice and can always help remind me of my passion and why I do what I do.
My best friend, Collin Savage, is the biggest rock I have. He has helped me celebrate every single success and overcome every single setback. Through every up and every down, he has lent an ear and been a support system I could never have done this without. I look back and sometimes wonder how I have managed to get through some of the tough situations I have encountered. Then I remember I have my best friend in life next to me and I can accomplish anything with him by my side.
