We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany, what matters most to you?
Resilience, because life is hard. People expect so much from you and if things don’t come out the way they imagined or as planned, you end up basing your feelings of success or failure off of someone’s expectations. I’m blessed that I’ve grown from that mindset and tell myself, “I can’t and won’t do that anymore” . Looking back, I realized that every obstacle thrown my way was no feat for my resilience. I bounced back every time.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Nothing is ever easy. I think my biggest challenge was finding a balance between my career as a Nursing Home Administrator and my new purpose of becoming a Yoga Instructor. I equally love both of them because they ultimately help people and that’s what I feel is my true purpose, but it was difficult making time for both. I’ve learned that time management is super important and I have to make time for me and my self care; yoga is just that.
I want the world to know that you can do it! Whatever you put your mind to. Take that first step and don’t be afraid to fail. Honestly failing is just practice. All the obstacles in my story were just practice leading me to my success and it’s only just the beginning.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There is so much to do in Atlanta it’s hard to choose, but Monday through Thursday fun things to do would include visiting Spin Art Atlanta, The Painted Pin, Top Golf, and Atlantic Station. Then for food making sure you visit The Hive, Roc South, Modish, and Fin and Feathers! Lastly, a great dessert place is Cafe Intermezzo. Now, for a formal itinerary, here’s something for the weekend:
Friday
Dinner/Comedy show at SuiteFood Lounge
Saturday
Rooftop Loa
Puttshack
Dinner at Negril
Sunday
Brunch at Blaqhous
Day party at Visions
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents are definitely my biggest supporters. They always made me feel as if I could be or do anything I put my mind to.
Other than them, I want to acknowledge SparksYoga in Macon, Georgia. I’ve been doing yoga since 2018 and over the years I had never experienced black and brown women yoga instructors. Last year, when moving to Georgia, I was looking for a yoga studio and I stumbled upon Sparks. They instruct one of my favorite classes entitled “Deep Stretch with Ty” which gave me a great feeling, and that was to be taught by someone that looked like me.
After going a few times, I saw that Sparks Yoga promoted a training for new yoga teachers and even offered scholarships to POC to diversify the field. Ty encouraged me to apply and here I am. I just recently taught my first yoga class this past weekend and by the end of this month I’ll be a certified yoga instructor, with many more classes to come ! I hope to see you there!
