Meet Brittany Browne | Military Officer & Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Browne and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting my own business wasn’t something that I always thought of. I am in the Army, so for the longest all I thought about was excelling as an Army Officer. But as I approached 30, and was restricted from running due to injuries, I noticed how how hard it was to keep off weight. Naturally, I am not a “Gym Girlie”, I did what was needed for the military. But I wanted to get motivated , and also feel comfortable with all my new changes going to the gym and trying new things. That is when Kali & Zayne came about , which means strong and beautiful in Swahili and Arabic. I wanted to feel good on the inside and outside and I want all women to feel that way when stepping into the gym or running errands etc.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Currently, I proudly serve as a Field Grade Officer in the United States Army. I am most proud of this career path because I took a chance on something I knew nothing about. Growing up in Philly and attending an all Girls High School, the military was not something they promoted. So when I was awarded a ROTC Scholarship to attend Virgina State University, I took it and never looked back. Easily the best decision I have made so far. It’s not always an easy job, but seeing the positive impact I have on soldier’s and knowing I am making a small difference in the world is truly a blessing.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting me here , of course we would probably go find a Nigerian Restaurant because we love the food! We are kind of home bodies when we are stateside but once we are vacation, we explore and really get emerged in the culture there.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My “Girls” which are my core circle of friends. They are all motivational and setting the bar for other women of color , and it has been a blessing to have friendships over 10 years where we are uplifting one another.
