We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Ball and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process with starting my own business was very long and hard. There would be days I would right out a business plan and then not pick it back up until weeks later. I think with me having anxiety and depression it makes it a challenge for me because I would overthink everything a lot. Most recently I took a chance on a dream I had to start waxing but as I noticed that the space that I was trying to be in wasn’t for me or that they didn’t want to take a chance on me. I decided to open doors for myself and start my own business because I know how hard it is in this industry as African American young woman.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Before I started my business I attended Aveda Arts in 2021 and graduated in October of that year. I then took some time off to see what I wanted to do with my life and applied to nursing school. Two years later I registered for the written and practical exam and now am a licensed esthetician. I have been working my whole life since I was 15 and I have known since then that I wanted to be my own boss I was just too scared to take a chance on myself. I don’t think it’s hard at all to start a business. I know social media make it look easy but it takes a lot of thought and money to start a business. I’m not saying it to discourage anyone cause yes it is easy to get an LLC but have a plan on what you going to do when you get that LLC And how your business is going to stand out from the rest. Some things that I have learned along the way are to trust yourself go with your first instinct and not listen to others when you are chasing your dream. I also had to learn not to compare my success to others and that we are all on different paths . I want people to know that my brand and my story are that I’m chasing a dream like everyone else that success doesn’t happen overnight that with hard work we can all make it. What’s going to set my business aside from everyone else is my customer service and wanting to get to know my customers . I want to change as many people’s lives as I can rather its with a conversation or a service.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my BestFriend is was coming from the weekend for breakfast we would go to Another Broken Egg Cafe or First Watch I love their breakfast. Then for lunch we would go to Creole Connection or Big Whiskeys. For dinner we would go to urban parc or yo chef. It’s so many things to do in Birmingham for fun for night out we would go to Cru Lounge or Casanova. It’s also a new bar that’s open in Birmingham call volume I haven’t been yet but it looks like a vibe. It’s so many things to do that I probably forgot to name.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
One person that I would like to dedicate my shout-out to and who deserves a little credit and recognition I would like to say it’s a combination of my grandmother, aunt, mom, and son. Growing up I wasn’t rich but my family always made sure I had everything I needed. I have to thank my aunt for taking me in and always being there to steer me on the right path. I would also like to thank my grandmother who gave me everything even if it was her last she made sure I was happy. My mom faced a lot of challenges but it was her hustle that stuck with me because no matter what came her way she always showed up to get me what I needed. My son is also the reason I strive to be the best, he gives me the drive and determination I need to be the best version of myself.
