We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittani “Brittsense” Sensabaugh and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brittani “Brittsense”, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting my own business was multifaceted. Firstly, it stemmed from a desire for creative autonomy and the freedom to express myself without limitations. As an artist, I also recognized the importance of establishing my own business as a means of protecting myself from exploitation and ensuring fair treatment in deals and collaborations. By operating as a business owner rather than solely an artist, I could build a team, establish professional boundaries, and negotiate from a position of strength. Ultimately, starting my own business enabled me to not only pursue my passion for photography but also to create a sustainable platform for artistic expression and community empowerment.

Please tell us more about your art. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally? Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way? What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
My art is a reflection of my journey, blending elements of photography, storytelling, and cultural exploration. What sets me apart is my knowledge of self and spiritual awareness. I am a very intentional person & document from a lens of love and not trauma. This allows me to evoke a deeper connection.I create a sacred space for my people allowing them to return home to themselves.

Before I was able to document I had to realize that the areas I documented were valuable and that the worth was not negotiable. Before that step I had to realize that I myself was valuable enough to execute and create my own blueprint. Documenting is a way to navigate my journey through my own footsteps. I had to see the power of daily creating my own reality which allowed me to develop a self love & that same love developed for my people. I have established a boundary with outside society that doesn’t allow for me to be influenced or controlled on  how I see myself, my world and my people. You don’t get to dictate or influence my mentality  especially when your teachings are the self sabotaging energy I daily have to unlearn. I had to identify my love language. Identifying your love language develops once you realize that love is more powerful than fear. Society creates a fear based energy that surrounds and consumes us which does not allow for transparency.

Transparency is a mirror to our inner light and through that light we connect. Through this connection is when storytelling can develop. Documenting and telling your own story is a revolutionary act, & inner freedom to see the earth through the eyes of your experience and not someone else’s. It is a way to establish an inner power.

Breaking the spell and being the light that illuminates the darkness.

My path to where I am today professionally has been anything but easy. I’ve faced challenges, setbacks, and moments of doubt along the way. However, through perseverance, resilience, and unwavering dedication to my craft, I’ve overcome these obstacles and continued to push forward. One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is the importance of staying true to myself and my vision, even in the face of adversity. I’ve also come to understand the power of collaboration, seeking support from mentors, peers, and fellow creatives who have helped me grow and evolve as an artist. Ultimately, I want the world to know that my art is more than just images—it’s a platform for Creating your own narrative, Healing, and transformation. My brand and story are rooted in authenticity, empowerment, and the celebration of diverse voices and experiences. I strive to use my platform to uplift, fortify & nourish marginalized communities, Challenge & shatter societal norms + stereotypes, and inspire positive change in the world.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

Absolutely! I’m from Oakland and currently live a plant-based lifestyle, mostly cooking at home. However, if you’re dining out, here are some recommendations. When in the Bay Area, Shangri la vegan is my favorite plant based restaurant.  For breakfast Ole’s Waffle Shop in Alameda is a must, & for Latin American food + Pizza lovers, Cholita Linda & Cheeseboard  are fantastic choices. Lake Merritt in Oakland offers great vibes for meditation and enjoying the scenery. In my younger days, Berkeley, particularly around the UC Berkeley campus, was a favorite hangout spot. I also love the fantastic views at Indian Rock in North Berkeley & Nature walks at Tilden Park. The Bay Area has plenty of places to enjoy live music, Yoshi’s Jazz Venue being one of them. Book store: Marcus Books & If you need your Crown ( hair) done, Photogenic Salon is a must, Pure healing & community energy.  Also, be sure to check out Mr. Fab and the DOPE ERA shop in downtown Oakland. You never know who you can run into there!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I want to give recognition to my mother, Jenetha Scates, who transitioned & became my most powerful ancestor in 2022. The unconditional love that she gave to me is the same love I give to my craft. Her unwavering love, support, and belief in my vision continues  to motivate me every day. My beautiful niece Bailey who is my heart in human form and has played a significant part in me healing my inner child. Next, I extend a heartfelt gratitude to my Executive Curator and the entire 222MEDIA Staff for their tireless dedication and commitment to our vision.  Richard Beavers Gallery for providing me with the space to have my first New York Solo Exhibition. I also want to shout out Queen Afua, for giving me my Rite Of Passage. Her mentorship and the wisdom shared in her book “Sacred Woman ” have profoundly impacted my spiritual journey. Additionally, I extend my appreciation to the entire Nation of Sacred Women for their collective support and empowerment.

2 people within my tribe who are the founders of CRWNMAG Lindsey & Nkrumah Farrar for their continuous inspiration, love & support.  Last but certainly not least, a special shoutout goes to Deep East Oakland, California, where I was born and raised. The resilience and strength of my community have shaped me into the person I am today.
