We had the good fortune of connecting with Britney Ray and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Britney, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
In the midst of a global pandemic, I saw people struggling. Struggling, mentally, physically, emotionally, financially, you name it. People struggled between balancing jobs/looking for jobs and finding time to take care of themselves. At the same time I saw an uprising in black-owned businesses, so I wanted to think of a way to help people prioritize self-care and simultaneously support businesses.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

Self Company is a monthly self-care box. Filled with a variety of products, we want to help people indulge in self-care in an affordable way…. right in their home. Every product in our box is created by a person of color, that sets us a part from many main stream subscription boxes.

My background is in PR & Marketing, so I thought starting my own business would be easy. I was wrong! It’s so different working for someone else and creating your own thing from scratch. You really have to be dedicated and put in 100% every single day.

I want other people to know that if you want to start something, DO IT NOW. You got it.

As far as my business, we’re all about supporting people of color. If you need a self-care pick me up without breaking the bank, shop with us. If you own a business and want some extra exposure, email us.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Okay, so one of my favorite things to do is go to Ponce City Market. You can eat, drink, shop, and chill outside. I would also probably do a basketball, baseball, football or soccer game, depending on the season!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In the creation of my business my husband, Roderick, has been my biggest supporter. From financial support, to taking on extra household work, and helping me create social content. .. he’s been the biggest help!
