We had the good fortune of connecting with Brian Revels and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brian, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
Humility is definitely up there. Being a musician, you’re presented with some pretty hilarious “feast and famine” scenarios. One night, my old band, City Mouse, got to open up a sold-out show for the Steeldrivers (post-Christ Stapleton) at Terminal West. That night was so incredible. And the next afternoon I was back to biking to work to wait tables at Eddie’s Attic, which is a cool gig in it’s own right but just can’t compare to taking the stage at T-West.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
One of the less glamorous parts of being a songwriter today is the sheer amount of work ethic it takes to meet your daily needs while breathing life into your creative pursuits. After years and year of waiting tables, doing construction, and other odd jobs to keep making rent while making music, I decided to go back to school and study advertising. It was a big leap of faith that plunged me way deeper into what was already a pretty steep student loan debt. But it was an incredible experience and introduced me to a huge network of creative people in Atlanta and beyond that I had yet to tap into. Now, advertising is my day job and is giving me more of the resources I need to keep making records and producing content to stay, or even become, relevant as an artist. I’m afraid from some people’s perspective it may look like I’m giving up on music, but it’s quite the opposite.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m gonna bar a pandemic threat from this hypothetical scenario and say that we would (in no particular order)… Get breakfast at Homegrown and Folk Art at some point during the week. Check out who was playing at Eddie’s, Variety and Terminal West. Hike/bike ride in East Palisades. Comedy at Laughing Skull. Get dinner from Venkman’s, El Progresso, and Banshee EAV. Hang in Piedmont Park, bike the Beltline like some tourists. Window show at Ponce (I can’t afford shit there). Probably grab a burrito from Minero before we left. Also, I’m partial to movies at Midtown Art Cinema, especially the throwbacks and special series they curate.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Andy Hingley, Matt Arnett, and the extended Eddie’s Attic family.
