We had the good fortune of connecting with Breathless and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Breathless, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
For me, I’d just say consistency. From rehearsing to songwriting, I think the more you do it, and the more you learn and research ways to improve, it will improve. We are often given the advice that you have to work hard in order to succeed is something I used to believe was necessary as well. However, what I’ve learned is that if I’m diligent, consistent and smart about the choices I make, all of that will in turn compound into success all on its own. Understanding your goal, and having a plan to get there! I have worked myself too hard, my capacity cannot give 100% toward success. Churning the wheel, so to speak. So rest and rejuvenation have also been key in my growth. Balance is key!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I would consider myself a multi-faceted artist. I’m a vocal artist and a songwriter. I also curate projects and events. I do voice over work for cartoons and more! I enjoy the art of writing a song and being able to relay that emotion and message visually and auditory on stage through performance. I think for me, having these two things as a strong suit, strong lyrical ability and an incredible stage show, are what helps make me unique. I did 175 shows in one year, and had the craziest schedule ever, but it really helped expose me to so many new fans. The beauty of it all for me is that music is my purest form of release. It’s my outlet. My emotional expression. Sometimes it’s the ONLY way I can even discuss a situation. These songs give me the voice I was always afraid to use.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For a week? Oooh wee… I’m still learning the city, but really loving so many areas. Depending on when they visit, I’d hit up a Frequency Friday at the High museum or a First Fridays at the Underground…hit the Botanical Gardens, Ponce…depending on what friend it is lol it could be the MLK Tour or one of the dope local open mics! The thing I’m discovering about Atlanta is that there is something for every kind of mood. It’s full of great food and great activities.
Another thing I like about this place is the fact that there are SO many creatives out here creating. And Atlanta creates space for those artists too in many ways. I recently received the Invest Atlanta Creative Industries Grant to be able to produce my new project.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A few shout outs I feel like I need to give out are: to my wife for always supporting in all the ways. Much love to my Atlanta Family – Ricky who engineers me at GSU School of Music and videographer, Josef Wilkins. My band, The Cosmos consisting of Isaiah on drums, Addae on bass, Ezra on keys and sometimes Pops on the shaker. And my Atlanta Pitbull who always helps make a way if there can be one made. My Oakland crew – my coven Femme Deadly Venoms with a new single “My Witches” that released 7-7-2023. Crew consisting of DJ LadyFingaz, Aima the Dreamer, Dakinistar and myself. My collab potna Lil MC and we’ve got a new single “Beast Mode” releasing on 8/4/23.
