We had the good fortune of connecting with Braxton Cosby and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Braxton, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted to get into the publishing arena because of my love of storytelling. I wrote my first novel in 2010 that was picked up by a small publisher right there in Atlanta. After going through some struggles after the publisher went out of business, I was left facing the decision of what I would do next with reacquiring the rights to my story. I settled in and signed with another small publisher and we just didn’t see eye to eye on a few things concerning the sequel. So I made the tough decision to purchase back my rights and then decided to go at it on my own and publish the book myself. Needless to say, PROTOSTAR was a huge hit, garnering countless book of the year awards and that process formed my opinion of moving forward in the indie scene. I wanted to help other authors navigate the tricky arena of self-publishing but on a larger scale. So, that’s what I did! Cosby Media Productions, Inc. was born, but was more than just a Small Press Publisher. We pride ourselves on parenting with authors to ensure that their project has the look and feel of the industry standards set by the “Big 5” so that they would have all the necessary tools to succeed.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve won over 10 book awards and accolades for my writing as a novelist, including my young adult novel “Protostar”, which earned the Readers’ Favorite Book of the Year Award for Sci-Fi Romance, as well as the Literary Classics International Book Award for Sci-Fi Young Adult. My adapted screenplay for “Protostar” was a Quarter-finalist in the 2020 ScreenCraft Sci-Fi & Fantasy Screenplay Competition. I’ve since penned over 18 more novels, 4 screenplays, and 3 comics. Along with 5 other writers in the CMP stable, we’ve crafted our own Superhero Universe called the CMPDSU (Cosby Media Productions Dedicated Superhero Universe) with over 19 different novels of superhero fiction and 5 comics. My story, “The Cape”, includes 4 novels and one comic with an overarching story that pushes the boundaries of imagination. As you can imagine, doing all of this and running a corporation is not easy and it takes a team. Thankfully. I have wonderful editors, formatters, cover artists, and voice-over artists who bring our novels and audiobooks to life. But my work doesn’t stop there. I also flex my acting chops now and again to perform voice-over work myself, having narrated over 5 of my own novels for distribution.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, first of all, we’d probably stay at the W Hotel. It’s swaggy and centrally located and easy access to all the popping spots in Atlanta. Then I’d try to plan our stay around a few sporting events like watching the Hakws or checking out a soccer match. But you can’t visit Atlanta without checking out the fabulous restaurants and food. There’s a ton of spots to hit up, but some of my favs are Thumbs Up for breakfast, Herban Fix for lunch, and since I’m a steak lover, I’ve got to swing by Marcels. And if there’s time left, why not catch a show at the Fabulous Fox Theater?

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This Shoutout goes to my wife, my right hand, my soulmate, my person. Shontel Cosby. She keeps me grounded at all times and is always there for me when I need an ear to listen to and a shoulder to lean on. She builds me up and is my biggest support and support system. I never would’ve done everything concerning Cosby Media Productions, Inc. (CMP) without her. Our presence in the Small Press Publishing sector continues to grow in our visibility at Cons and our relationships at the community level with schools and venues. She is the owner and backbone of everything we do at CMP.
