Meet Brandy Calhoun | Cosmetologist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandy Calhoun and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brandy, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
Consistency is key. The beauty industry is a consistency-based industry. If you’re not consistent in your work, products, social media/advertisement, etc, it always reflects back on your business. You have to continue to do what you’re doing. Being consistent is how you grow, learn skills, perfect your craft, and, gain clientele and customers. When you’re being consistent, change is inevitable.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an up-and-coming cosmetologist! I’m currently enrolled in cosmetology school, graduating in late September 2021. I’ve always been in love with hair and beauty. Now that I’m older, seeing people so happy and confident after being serviced really keeps me going. I believe what sets me apart from other stylists is my ability to be creative and a problem solver. I always use this to my advantage when working with clients. Every client is different, so you have to figure how to tailor the experience for their services. I am most proud of myself for following my dreams. Years ago, I wouldn’t even think about doing what I am doing now. When I first decided to be a cosmetologist, I was working as a customer service representative. I hated it!! I was so unhappy and miserable. I knew if I’d quit, my next career move had to be major and it had to be something I was passionate about, which of course is hair and beauty. I quit my job, moved to a new city, started as an apprenticeship in a salon and for the first time in my life, I didn’t hate waking up for work! During COVID quarantine, I had to end my apprenticeship. Afterward, I was super down on myself, the world was in shambles, it was just too much for me. Like I said before, my next move had to be major, so I enrolled in cosmetology school a month later. I knew I couldn’t stop because this is what I wanted and prayed for. Don’t give up on yourself, it’s so easy for us to get wrapped up in everything going on around us, but when you have dreams and goals you’re trying to accomplish, you have to see it through. I want the world to know at B. Leigh’s Beauty Studio, you’re not here to just get hair services, you’re here to enjoy the experience, to leave feeling your best self. B. Leigh has arrived and I am here to stay!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If anyone is coming to visit me, we’re going to King Crab ATL. I love that place so much, it’s definitely the sauce and seasoning that keeps me coming back. Then we’ll head to Cirque or the Ponce City for drinks & fun! I love being outdoors, so we gotta walk the beltline!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family and my friends. The words of encouragement for the times I may be down. The unconditional love that I never have to question, the overload of support whenever I decide to conquer a new obstacle in life, these people are always there. Nothing ever goes unnoticed and I’m grateful for them. The phrase “it takes a village to raise a child” is literally my life. Thankful they’re here to help mold me into the woman I am becoming.
