We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandon Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brandon, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
I would like to be remembered by others as a hard worker who would not allow failure to be an excuse, but rather a motivation. I have tons of things in life I could have used as excuses to quit on the career path that I am pursuing, but you only get one life and you might as well chase something that you are passionate about. I have 10 total nieces and nephews and anytime I feel as though I am putting limitations on myself, I think about setting an example for them. I want to show the next generation that if you put in the work, you truly can achieve anything you put your mind to.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe what sets me apart from a good portion of producers in the Hip-Hop/Rap space is that I play an instrument and I used my musicianship as a tool to further my education. The thing that I am most proud of is that even though my journey to where I am did not go as I originally planned, I kept going and it allowed me to hone my skills primarily self taught. I believe nothing in life worth having will be easy, and that is definitely the case of carving out a lane in very saturated music industry. Whether it’s learning the business side of things, engineering sessions and providing beats for artist for free to establish relationships, or getting told no (a lot), it all lays the ground work for you to stand on. A few lessons I’ve learned is that you have to make yourself an asset and not be limited to just one thing. The more versatile you are the more likely you are to get your foot in the door. Even if it is something you may not want to do long term, it can still set you up to put you in a position to build relationships and in this industry relationships are everything. I would like the world to know that my story is one that anyone can look to and pull something from. Rather you are the first one in your family to pursue your dream like I am or you chose a more traditional path, as long as you put in the work you will reap what you sow.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My go to spot in Chattanooga is a place called Sunset Rock up on Lookout mountain. It is a great place to clear your mind as well as enjoy a great view of downtown Chattanooga. I primarily visit sunset rock in the late evening right before sunset so prior to that enjoying dessert from the Ice Cream Show and snagging wings from a karaoke joint called Sing it or Wing it will always hit the spot. Prior to getting food, downtown Chattanooga is a great place to walk especially out in front of the aquarium by the river walk. Depending on the time of the year going to a Lookouts baseball game is a good way to relax from time to time or checking out live music during Nightfall. A few other chill spots I enjoy visiting include the Chattanooga Cigar Club, The Southside Social, and Goodfellas pizzeria.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My big brother, Credaless, has always had a huge impact on my life and I definitely would not be where I am in life without his love and support. Our father passed away when I was 8 years old and as I began to get older, all of the guidance I would have looked for from my father came via my brother. Rather it be academics, sports, music, gaming, dating, and anything in between, he has been a rock in my life and I very grateful to have him.
