We had the good fortune of connecting with Brady Michael and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brady, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
My favorite quote that has remained prominent in my life the most has been “Change is the only constant.” I have found that circumstances, friendships, relationships, and more are consistently evolving and changing in our lives. Rather than fearing and trying to avoid these changes, I have found that it is more rewarding to lean into the change and allow the progression of our lives to be a beautiful thing instead of a scary or frustrating thing.
Please tell us more about your art. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
My art is based off of two major points: music and movement. I find myself continuously drawn to and motivated by all kinds of music, and I challenge myself to always move and create movement from a genuine place. I never want anything to feel forced or unintentional. The accomplishments I am most proud of are always the works that evoke emotional reactions in the audience, whether that’s a full-length show, a competition piece, or even a dancer’s execution of a phrase in class that is simply outstanding. I think the challenges I find in my art the most is remaining authentic. There is so much noise and everyone promoting their own work and brand, especially through social media; it sometimes becomes hard to not emulate what someone else is already speaking on. What I want the world to know about me is that I love art, I love dance, I love teaching children, and I love that we, as artists, are so misunderstood because we make people feel shit without ever speaking a word.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This may seem a bit basic for any ATLien, but I have always loved hanging at Ponce City Market. The food is great (Hop’s Chicken, in particular), the shops are nice, and I just love the environment.
I’m also a huge coffee shop enthusiast. Some of my go-tos are Marble House Coffee in Acworth, Alma Coffee in Canton, and Cultivate in Atlanta.
Lastly, I have been collecting vinyl for the last seven years, and I could spend hours in Criminal Records in Little Five Points. They have records, CDs, books, merch, and more. If you’re a music guru, I highly recommend.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I honestly want to shoutout my students. I am constantly inspired by their hard work ethic, their passion, and their willingness to throw themselves into my work, whether that is in class or choreography. I feel quite lucky to be able to instruct a group of young artists who are open-minded, hungry, and fervent about their craft; it really is a remarkable thing to experience on a weekly basis.
