We had the good fortune of connecting with Bingjie Cui and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bingjie, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
I want to be remembered as a bold dreamer and a person who can take her dream to be realistic. I want the same for my artworks- I want my works ‘speak for’ my audience with powerful and interesting visual language.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I love my life. I’m a person full of passion and energy so in my early illustration works, there are interesting moments I created from my imagination based on my experience. While with my science background, I like to think about social phenomena in a more rational way. The interesting jump between ‘rational’ and ‘emotional’ thinking allows me to create artworks that are corresponding to the literacy and texts. I have a background in totally different fields- science, urban planning, and arts. I wouldn’t say the road so far it’s been obstacle free, but I do really enjoy this challenging journey. I’m excited about the challenges and gaps among different majors, and I wanna dedicate a shoutout to myself for being brave, executive, and passionate along the road. My experiences are what I’m proud of – these exactly inspired me to branch out in my art career.
As an illustrator, I love telling stories with visual puns and powerful visual language. My series ‘In Xinjiang’ depicts the harmonious and inclusive life in my hometown which I would love to share more in the later context. I’m hoping through my artwork people would feel the mysterious power of the creative world.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely take my friend to Piedmont Park, from where we can hug nature with diverse people. Ponce city market would be another spot in the city I would show my friend on weekends, You never know what surprise you can find there on weekends. I would say Atlanta is a great place for creative exploration and street art, so Underground Atlanta would also be in my plan- an impressive spot to ‘meet up’ with the creatives and local culture. For eat and drink, Gus’s World famous fried chicken would be a fun spot to check out the local cuisine. Besides, some Korean restaurants in Duluth are popular choices for Asian cuisine. As the indispensable part of the trip- drinking, I think Buckhead has many interesting options to be explored.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

Firstly, I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my parents for their consistent support and belief. I also want to express my sincere gratitude to my professors from SCAD, for their continued encouragement and valuable suggestions.

Thanks for all the love and support. Finally, I want to dedicate my shoutout to myself for being brave, executable, and interesting all the time.
