We had the good fortune of connecting with Beth Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Beth, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
There are many people who use the terms ‘decorator’ and ‘designer’ interchangeably, however, there are are distinct differences between the two professions in terms of education, scope of work, and qualifications. Typically, interior decorators focus on the aesthetics of interior spaces. While some decorators are self-taught, others may have some education in color theory, furniture styles, textiles, and decorative elements. Interior designers typically have more extensive education and ongoing training. Designers usually hold a bachelor’s degree in interior design or a related field and their education covers a broader range of topics, including space planning, building codes, construction techniques, and design principles. Interior designers often have a deeper knowledge of architecture and may work on projects involving structural changes to interior spaces, as with kitchen and bath design. They may be involved in space planning large commercial spaces as well as architectural detailing, lighting design, and specifying materials for construction or renovation projects. Interior designers consider not only the visual aspects of a space but also its usability, safety, and compliance with building codes and regulations. Interior designers can decorate but they are also trained to conceptualize and plan the layout and functionality of interior spaces, while decorators specialize in enhancing aesthetics through the selection and arrangement of furnishings and decor.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The most precious resource any of us have is our energy. Yes, time is important, but energy, to me, is more important. At the beginning of a project, it is important that our clients realize that we put a lot of energy into their projects. Design is my livelihood, and my wish is that clients see the enthusiasm that we bring to the table to achieve the WOW factor they would never have achieved on their own. Designing a home or going through a renovation can be a long process. We spend a lot of time together! We get to know the family and details about what’s going on in their lives, and I’m proud to say that many of our clients have become friends because they appreciate our diligence, professionalism and results. It is way easier and more fun to work for clients who appreciate our time AND energy than those who don’t.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live just a few miles from some of the best shopping and dining experiences in Atlanta! Avalon always has a fun atmosphere and the unique restaurants offer something for everyone. I love strolling around Downtown Alpharetta with friends, and I love taking visitors to Up on the Roof to enjoy the view of our City Center below or take in a wonderful sunset. There is always plenty of people watching around the town green, especially at the Alpharetta Farmers Market on Saturday mornings! And since I’ve lived in Alpharetta for 20+ years, I always bump into someone I know.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d love to give a shoutout to my amazing clients over the years. They have trusted me with their biggest asset, their home, to make it not only beautiful but more functional for their family. I am blessed to be pursuing my passion in a profession that I love, and it’s all thanks to the trust my clients place in me that allows me to do what I love.
