We had the good fortune of connecting with Beth Compton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Beth, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Over time I have helped different friends and family with event invitations. Soon after college, I was teaching and had my two sons, Lincoln and Eliot. Eventually I decided to stay at home and just pick up the odd job here and there, always taking on creative work when my friends and family asked (or even when their friends and family asked).
Naturally, over time more and more of my life was revolving around my kids and their needs. but my sister-in-law, Heather, got married in Charleston in 2018. I created most of her design and print needs and fell in love with the process. She really championed me and even gave me my first referral for wedding invitations. She encouraged me to channel my abilities into a business and soon after, Tinlizzy Design Co. was born. I saw it as an opportunity to have something that was just for me – not for my husband (though super supportive) and not for my kids (relatively tolerant).
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Every couple is so unique from every other couple, so creating custom invitations requires me to stretch my abilities on a regular basis. I don’t operate off templates when I gather couples’ design ideas. Sometimes invitations are similar to past work, but sometimes the concepts are totally new to me and require extra time and intentionality.
I like that. I prefer that. New ideas push me out of my comfort zone. Keep me engaged and interested. This doesn’t always lead to a great social media presence because I can’t seem to find that one color scheme or filter to show off work, but I hope prospective clients can see that the work I do doesn’t fit in one box. I am happiest hopping from one style to another.
Over time, I have found I really enjoy custom sketches of venues and am finding my niche in that area. I love when couples feel like they are sending little bits of art to their guests. This doesn’t always lead to efficiency, but I’ve quickly learned that creative work and efficiency don’t always get to go hand-in-hand. Embracing the work, whether the minutes stack into hours or not, is the journey. If I compare my first sketches when beginning three years ago to now, I see big strides of growth.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love all things small town and local, especially when it relates to food. Living in Metro Atlanta, it’s easy to hop down I-85 and find tasty, trendy restaurants, but there are so many gems outside the city.
Take Braselton, GA for example. Small downtown but great food and drinks in walking distance. You can grab a locally brewed beer at Braselton Brewery, originally a historic cotton mill. Walk catty corner to Local Station for tasty handhelds and cocktails for dinner. Lastly, end up at Blake’s for live music and night cap. All outside eating options available, my personal preference.
Slightly west, there’s Flowery Branch, GA on Lake Lanier. Hands down best restaurant is Antebellum and sweets at Liberty Candy. Easy to take a walk over at Flowery Branch Park on Lake Lanier.
I’ve recently relocated to Dacula, GA and am excited to explore my new town!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Heather Duke, sister-in-law, and seed planter. After designing her 2018 wedding suite – invitations, envelopes and day-of signage – she encouraged me to step out and make something bigger with my abilities. She truly has a heart to encourage those around her.
My husband, Matt Compton. Just as I was getting my business off the ground, he has my hype man, going on to tell anyone and everyone about what I was up to. Grateful for the cluster of west coast clients I was gifted the opportunity to work with because of his chatter to co-workers.
All the amazing venues and wedding vendors in Northeast Georgia that have advertised and showcased my work, including Cold Creek Farm, The Willows Farm, Georgia Doll Events, Jessica Bencomo Events, Christina Kelley Photography and more.
