We had the good fortune of connecting with Bessie Lee-Cappell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bessie, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe that if you do not take risks, you will never know what you are truly capable of doing in life. Not all risk can lead to the reward or outcome that you aspire to have. However, you will learn from the experience which is rewarding within itself. When you learn what you can do, what you should do better next time, you elevate yourself and your skills. So, in my opinion, (it may sound cliche) without risk, there is no reward.

Most of my life, I have been taking risks. I have chosen paths that I was uncertain about. I have taken leaps that many would have been afraid to take. Luckily for me, they have all worked in my favor. I always go into what may be a challenging situation with the mindset of giving it my best and see what happens. I often tell myself “if it doesn’t go as plan, or if It goes unfavorable for you, it is ok, make the best out of it.”

What should our readers know about your business?
My brand is unique because the owner (Bessie Lee-Cappell) is also the inventor of the products sold. The Brush bib and the All in One Pacifier Teether Clip have a Provisional Patent Application. These unique items have been created by an African American mom from Philadelphia PA. This is not a “normal” or “typical” everyday accomplishment.

It has been far from easy trying to build my brand. As a result, I have decided to work on my brand full-time. I love being a social worker, however, I also love this new journey in my life. I want to be fair to myself and explore this portion in my life fully, just as I have done with social work.

I have learned many lessons along the way, and I know that there is much more to learn. The business terminology was all new to me. Learning acronyms such as JV (Joint Venture), VC (Venture capital) and much more was all foreign to me. I also learned to slow down on some financial risks. I was in a rush to grow my business, to the point that I would spend major funds on marketing ideas that were not worth the expense, therefore, losing money.

I want the world to know that, I use to tell the media publications that I was fighting for the seat at a table in an industry led by caucasian males. Now, I am telling the world that I no longer want a seat at the table, But my brand and I will be the table that they want a seat at. We are looking for your support to get us there.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Philadelphia has some fun spots to visit. If a friend were to visit me in Philadelphia, I would take them to karaoke lounge called Yakatori Boy. It has private rooms to enjoy friend and family fun, filled with food drinks and karaoke.

Dave and Busters is another place. This place is more open to the public, but it has so much to do; eat, drink, play pool, game machines and bowling all in one place.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shout out my Husband, my 3 children, my aunt Brenda, my mother in law and my friend Angela. Without these people, I would not be where I am today. These people have supported me in my life journey. They have continued to support me along my entrepreneurial journey.
