We had the good fortune of connecting with Besona Bettah and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Besona, how do you think about risk?
I think risk taking is a part of life . I’ve always been a risk taker . Starting my business was a big risk because I used my last couple hundred dollars to begin and luckily it paid off .The way I look at it is if I fail , I’ve learned a lesson on what not to do next time .
What should our readers know about your business?
I started my business back in 2012 in my Bronx apartment . I was a new mom . I just had a premie so daycare just wasn’t an option for me . I needed something I could do to make money while providing care for my baby. I tried making accessories and that didn’t work .Ive always been passionate about hair and beauty . I began researching the virgin hair market ,found suppliers and ordered my first samples.
It wasn’t easy . I got bad batches, people were trying to take advantage of me . I didn’t get my first online sale until 6 months after launching my website. Getting my name out there was very hard . I just kept trying and reached out to a rising YouTuber Lakia Star and she did a review that got me my 1st online purchase. After that I continued working with different influencers and found my niche .
I’ve learned soo much during this journey. #1 no one is going to work harder for your business other than you . Invest in yourself. My business is my baby . I take pride in my product ,brand name and customer experience. Quality is always 1st!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Hands down I’d take them to Arnetts, Zakia,or Tulum for dinner . I’m not a party girl so I don’t know the best hangout spots . During the week we’d have a spa day at the St.Regis . Grab drinks at The Garden Room.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom. She’s my M.V.P and the most supportive person in my corner.
