We had the good fortune of connecting with Bernard Baker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bernard, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always enjoyed serving my community, whether in ministry by leading youth programs and mentoring young adults. Starting this business is my way of giving back to all who I have been in contact with over the years. Meeting the needs of our youth is my goal.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a graduate of Macon State College where I obtained a degree in Teacher Education. I have been employed with GEICO Insurance for 22 years. I’ve always wanted to work in corporate America so I turned my job into a career. I’ve faced many challenges, but with God’s help and the encouragement of my family, I’ve overcome them all. I had to remember it wasn’t about me. I remained focused on the goal at hand. After the death of 2 close friends who happen to be brothers, The BIGG B Foundation was launched to empower, inspire and transform the community, one person at a time. It is our goal to address the social, emotional and cultural needs of youth and young adults in the Central and South Georgia communities. The program focuses on building essential skills needed to become productive, contributing citizens. BIGG B Foundation is dedicated to helping the youth choose the path to success by providing the resources, tools, support and sense of security.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in a rural area, with an air force base and has many colleges nearby. There are many attractions to visit. I often take family and friends to one of the many restaurants, Margaritas, Longhorn, Cheddar’s, The Hot Spot, and Yami Crab to name a few. Other places on the list would include the national fair, bowling alley, walking trails, cinemas, spring and summer festivals or a quick trip to Atlanta for the day.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate our success to the Kind and King Family. I was granted their permission to share their story and begin the foundation due to the death of my brothers/friends, Kevin and Cedric Kind.
