Meet Benjamin Sims | Thespian|Vocalist|Model|Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Benjamin Sims and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Benjamin, why did you pursue a creative career?
My pursuit of an artistic and creative career stems from a deep need for expression, joy, community, acceptance, and a sense of belonging. Growing up in a southern, religious household, I often struggled to reconcile my internal identity with the expectations placed upon me. My mannerisms, thoughts, and preferences were frequently questioned, casting a shadow over my developing sense of self. As a young Black boy of mixed ethnicity, I grappled with feelings of inadequacy and a lack of validation.
It’s important to note that my parents loved me deeply and supported me in their own way. However, due to their own upbringing, they didn’t always fully understand or see my perspective. They were simply parenting me based on the best of their knowledge and experiences.
Musical theater became my refuge. It offered a space where I felt at home, accepted, and loved. Unlike hyper-masculine pursuits, it resonated deeply with me. I excelled in singing, finding solace, and belonging in the youth choir at my Baptist church. Through storytelling and creative expression, I discovered a powerful way to explore my identity and find my voice.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My journey as a performer began in 6th grade with community theater productions around metro-Atlanta. This early exposure fostered a strong network within the industry. I further honed my skills by pursuing a degree in Musical Theater at Young Harris College (Class of ’15) and subsequently attending a post-graduate intensive program at the Aurora Theatre in Lawrenceville, GA.
This foundation enabled me to embark on a diverse career, encompassing professional theater productions in Atlanta, a captivating cruise ship experience, and forays into film, television, modeling, stage readings, and voiceover work. I even had the unique opportunity to appear on HBO’s now-archived dating show, “12 Dates of Christmas.”
While I’ve enjoyed the distinct privilege of performing on stage and screen, the path has not always been easy. Auditioning is the constant, the ‘job’ itself, while booking roles is the reward, the ‘vacation.’ The entertainment industry often presents financial challenges, requiring me to supplement my income with side jobs and retail work for many years.
Despite these hurdles, I’ve learned invaluable lessons throughout my journey. I’ve embraced adaptability, exploring other creative outlets like modeling, teaching, and mentoring. I’ve also co-founded PLIVATI (@_plivati_ on Instagram), a men’s swimwear and activewear brand, demonstrating my entrepreneurial spirit.
My career, while multifaceted, has always been driven by a passion for storytelling and a desire to connect with audiences. I strive to bring authenticity and dedication to every role I undertake.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Some of my favorite spots in Atlanta. Its a pretty diverse range of places haha. Each pocket of Atlanta has so many great things to offer. From delicious food, to cocktail lounges, to fun experiences. I don’t know that I can give you a week long itinerary cause as I type this I cant even figure what Im going to meal prep for the week lol. However, some of my favorites spots in and around Atlanta are for food Wagayu Midtown, R. Thomas’, Marcus Bar & Grille, Fritti, Silver Skillet, and Breakfast Boys to name a few. For cocktails a few drinks at Holiday Bar, MidCity, JoJos Beloved, High Note, The James Room, Hotel Clairmont Rooftop and Mambo Zombie. When it comes to a fun experience of dancing and enjoying music I have to give recognition to MSR, MJQ, Sunday Funday event called Bazaar Euphoria, Palo Santo, Virgils, Rocksteady, and Pisces.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Undoubtedly my best friend, my rock, my light; my mother. Without her guidance and unwavering support, I would not be the person I am today. My mother, Rev. Lurlene Pinkard-Sims, ensured that whatever opportunity arose no matter how much, how far, or when, I experienced it all in pursuit of being a well-rounded individual.
