We had the good fortune of connecting with Bella Roberts and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bella, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I didn’t particularly set off with the intention of starting a business.

Entrepreneurship wasn’t always the goal, however, being an immigrant forces one to improvise on career paths and that was how my business was founded. I had just gotten married, moved countries (Ghana to America), had a baby and I wanted a job that provided the flexibility to be available in her life as she grew, while I adjusted to the new transitions. A friend I had met, encouraged me to formally take a class in learning about and getting certified in Sisterlocks, so I did and then founded Loc’dandFree Natural Hair Salon.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
It’s been quite an interesting journey of not just learning about each person’s hair care needs, but growing as a professional and individual who curates an educative space for the experiences to be significant at every visit With persistence, utilizing the resources that have been shared with me over the years by either clients or colleagues, I have grown from fearing the unknown journey that lay ahead, and taken each challenging new season with grace and the eagerness to see my growth through the lessons learned. My brand encourages love in oneself; taking whatever generic, societal definition we have mastered over the years, and redefine it to suit our uniqueness. It encourages vulnerability and undoing shame while embracing the pride we need to feel through how we carry ourselves in our hair journey.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Undoubtedly, I would take them to L’Artisan Muse on Howell Mill. I don’t exactly have favorite spots so depending on who is visiting, I would customize the experience to suit that friend. Atlanta is a hub of so much to indulge in so it is hard to have an answer for the last part of this question but, I am a lover of the arts, theater and good entertainment so that will be something that will be experienced in some capacity.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to dedicate my shoutout to God for providing the opportunity and blessings. My husband and life partner, Bryan, for being my biggest cheerleader and pillar of strength. without whom I will not comfortably and confidently be the wholesome person I am today. Our daughter, Xolani, for making parenting easy and unconditionally loving me through the growing pains of running a demanding business that keeps me away for the better parts of her day. Also, for graciously providing the space for me to have an unorthodox style of parenting that works for us. My Mother and sisters, who are my ever constant sounding boards and oxygen tanks. The unending love and support they provide is extraordinary and crucial to my journey as a person.
