We had the good fortune of connecting with Belinda Vickerson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Belinda, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
In the beginning of my photography business I was shooting a bit of everything. Really exploring all the different aspects of photography and of my creativity. But my business and my brand really started to grow when I began to narrow down my target market. This gave my business a direction and a focus. It allowed my to build a customer profile so I could easily identify and attract the best client for my business model.
Once I could identify this client, I could build an entire experience just for them. This focus allows me to overserve my market and create a service and work that wows.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a portrait and branding photographer for women. My goal is to help women feel beautiful and strong and to create magazine quality images that they treasure forever. My love of fashion photography is what sets me apart from others. I have been able to infuse my work with an editorial style of photography to make my clients look and feel like supermodels!
I’m always most excited about the women I get to meet and serve through my business. I’ve photographed mothers, entrepreneurs, executives and University presidents. That is what I love about my business, it is constantly putting me in rooms with some outstanding women who inspire and motivate me. And, I get to show these women how absolutely beautiful they are through my photography!
This purpose is what drives me and my business. Once I found it, it gave me a focus and direction that allowed my business to grow. It also gave me the perseverance necessary to get to where I am. It would have been easy to quit when things got hard, but my purpose continues to pull me forward.
The most important lesson is that there are always challenges. Despite what you may see on social media, no one is immune to the struggle of growing a business. You are not doing yourself any favors when you compare your business journey to another’s. What you can do instead is to continue to learn! Read, get a mentor, network, participate in business focused groups.
I see entrepreneurship as a lifelong commitment. I’ve committed myself to not only growing my own business, but to helping others grow as well.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate this Shoutout to all of the people that have supported me in my business. Especially the creatives that I often team up with to create the work I do. I am eternally grateful for their contributions and support!
