Meet Bee Slaughter | Candlemaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Bee Slaughter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bee, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started making Naked Wick Candles because paraffin wax candles were creating health issues for my son, who suffers from allergies, asthma, and skin problems. I did my research and found out that 100% soy wax candles are non-toxic; which reduces indoor air pollution. After attending a candle making class, I started to make my own candles using 100% soy wax. The candles made from soy wax did not trigger my son’s allergies and asthma. That’s when I decided to create a candle business devoted to making eco-friendly candles that are safer to burn around people and pets.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets me apart from others is that I won a contest in 2019 that was offered by Angela Simmons and Purpose App looking for 5 women in business walking in their purpose. Being able to advertise my business on Purpose App gave Naked Wick Candles extreme exposure that would’ve been hard to do for a small business during the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
As a new candle maker in 2019, I thought it would be easy to make candles. I was wrong in more ways than one. Making candles is more than just melting wax and adding fragrance oil. Making a great smelling soy wax candle is determined by many factors including, the wax type, wick type, cure time, container size, room temperature, and the amount of fragrance oil used, to name a few.
What I want people to know about Naked Wick Candles is that our candles are hand-poured, non toxic, and made in small batches to ensure the highest quality.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Some of my favorites spots in Atlanta, GA: The Beverly
The Battery
Ponce City Market
Atlanta Beltline

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to thank Amber Hickman for teaching me how to make candles. After attending her candle making class, I had the basic tools and knowledge to start my business. I am forever grateful to her for that. I also want to thank my son, Christian for being my muse. He also helps with marketing for Naked Wick Candles.
