We had the good fortune of connecting with Becca Halm and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Becca, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I had very specific thoughts in what I hoped to create. Being a stay at home mom during covid and being away from my husband during the beginning of it, I really wanted to create something that could become a community and a place for parents from all over to feel a sense of belonging, to have a place to share their successes and milestones but to also vent about the struggles that we all face. I also wanted to create clothing that could give a sense of childhood magic, bringing something special within the mundane of everyday life! I think we have truly accomplished both of those things- we create a sense of nostalgia and longing for childhood with our prints, while also fostering connectivity and friendships.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I think I set my brand apart by creating a community and fostering those connections daily. With our book club, we have really increased engagement and loyalty and allowed more people to really take the time to “be a kid” with their children through reading and the crafts that we create to go with our monthly books! As well, I think our licensing deals we have been able to create have been an amazing way to set ourselves apart, especially because it is still rare for a small business to be able to license well-known characters. We are getting that trust from companies like Penguin Random House, Harper Collins, Scholastic Entertainment, and more, to bring to life these timeless characters for children and their parents today, which truly gives us something different! I think the biggest lesson I have learned is to mind my own business! While you have to be aware of your competitors and the market around you, you will also dig yourself a hole of negativity if you focus on other people’s successes as your own failures. When you are aware of what’s going on around you but focused on your own company, there will always be more growth to come than if you wallow in pity over someone else having it easier or going viral over you!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is actually a dream, I’d love to have my Little Bird Bamboo reps (models and their parents) come for a meetup someday! I think it would be fun to throw a big party that would have blow up machines, craft tables, and of course some Little Bird Bamboo products for the kids, while us moms would be able to sit and just enjoy company and relate to each other on our venting and our happiness! I’d likely take them to the aquarium, the Coca Cola factory, and the zoo, but I think it would also be really fun to do something with the adults only, like heading to the Battery, making sure anyone who hasn’t had Chick-Fil-A before gets to try it, and hanging out in a cute cabin in Helen since we all love the old-time style for drinks and food!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have a few amazing people honestly that could be great to shout out. First off, my parents have been an amazing support. My dad and step mom know business in many ways and are able to offer great insight, especially in the early days where I had to learn a lot as I went. My mom is also always supportive and cheering me on, while my mother in law and mom both take all the time they can to watch the kids when needed so I can continue working on growth within my brand! My husband was also the reason I was able to create this business considering I was a stay at home mom with no income; he gave me the chance to prove myself with a dream I believed in! Lastly, I have amazing friends (Gabby, Danielle, Hannah and Molly- along with all the reps on my team!) who cheer me on always, give me true opinions and help keep my brand name out there at all times! I couldn’t do it without any of them.
