We had the good fortune of connecting with Bari Mcknight and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bari, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I decided to pursue music because as I reached adulthood I was trying to reinvent fun. I had some free time and pinned up emotions and I figured what a good way to express it by doing music . It started out with me in my room playing beats from youtube. Then I would come up with lyrics and melodies. When I liked it enough I would record then and listen back later. As I kept doing it I started to feel accomplished and proud but most importantly I was having fun.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
So I am a singer/songwriter and I make the kind of songs that I like to hear. Just easy listening fun songs. I am most impressed on how the genere switches so frequently in my songs and how they improve with each project. A friend of mune who reviewed my music say it feels like summer. Which is a great analogy as summer is associated with freedom and fun. Those are two themes I like to leave with the audience.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well as a fella for the arts we would start the day early and grab breakfast. Now I love waffles so i’d probably make them at home or hit a diner somewhere down town. From there we would head over to Chelsea to see the art galleries. Cool thing is there are many and they are free. After I would be grabbing lunch at Chipotle because I have a ton of rewards points and I just enjoy their burrito. Once the Chipotle run is over i’ll head downtown again but to another art gallery. Difference is this gallery has a lounge area in the back. In the evenings they hold open mics. So we may just kick out the for the rest of the day and grab summer pizza for dinner at the famous spot Village Square Pizza.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Korleh Jackson is someone who helped me start my journey with music. We went on a road trip to Florida and there I met a friend of his who taught me to record myself. From there I started freestyling in my room for fun. This turned into something I did daily for a while. Without Korleh I probably wouldn’t have recorded myself or built up the confidence to go to the studio and rerecord the demos I made.
