We had the good fortune of connecting with Aylon Gipson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Aylon, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I hold the conviction that achieving success necessitates embracing calculated risks both in personal and professional domains. Throughout my journey, there have been numerous instances where I ventured beyond my comfort zone, pursuing positions, grants, and a plethora of opportunities that might have seemed beyond my qualifications. However, it is precisely these risks that have paved the way for a cascade of unforeseen prospects and personal growth.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
From my earliest years as a young child, my passion for public service was ignited through the remarkable influence of my grandfather. Together, we immersed ourselves in the realm of political and current affairs news, a shared activity that kindled a fervent commitment to contributing positively to the lives of others. As the years unfolded, this seed of dedication continued to flourish.

Throughout my collegiate journey, the flame of my passion for public service burned ever brighter. I had the honor of being chosen as a White House HBCU Scholar stands as a defining moment. In this esteemed role, I participated in high-level discussions focused on the pivotal policy matters that impact historically black colleges and universities. This experience both enriched my understanding and fortified my resolve.

Presently, I proudly hold the position of President at the Bonner Office of Community Service at Morehouse College, a role that entails overseeing a dynamic collective of 110 individuals. My responsibilities extend beyond administration to fostering a culture of civic engagement among our peers, instilling a sense of social responsibility that resonates throughout our activities. The fruits of our labor are noteworthy; our initiatives have catalyzed increased participation in the community, the City Council, and a spectrum of civic endeavors. Notably, our proactive efforts have yielded an information ecosystem that informs Morehouse students about opportunities for meaningful civic involvement.

Our dedication has transcended discourse and theory, translating into tangible outcomes. The allocation of over $15,000 towards civic engagement projects exemplifies our commitment to projects with positive community impact. These initiatives, in concert with my involvement in political fellowships with the City of Atlanta and Fair Fight Action, underscore my ongoing journey to effect meaningful change through the channels of public service.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many beautiful places in Atlanta it is honestly hard to pick from but if I had to I would choose Skyline, Sundial, and the renowned restaurant Bones.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The foundation upon which my journey stands is undeniably attributed to my beloved grandparents, Sammy and Geraldine Gipson. Their unwavering support, boundless love, and unyielding kindness have been the driving force behind every step I’ve taken. It is through their nurturing presence that I’ve acquired the strength and capacity to accomplish all that I have achieved
